There is a sense in which everyone who calls themselves Christian is "Christian" but does the person actually live in a Christ like manner?
Of course not. If they did, they wouldn't need Jesus and so wouldn't need to be a Christian. The standard which some Christians set for Christian behavior is a direct contradiction of what the religion teaches, that you are not perfect but can be forgiven.
If they don't then I can understand trying to say that such a person and their actions shouldn't be held up as an example of what is truly Christian. That's usually when people try to distance a person from their faith. When they do something crazy and then they are being held up as an example of what the faith is all about.
Occasionally we'll see a Jew doing something stupid but I have never heard of the Jewish community denying that the person is really a Jew.
Quite often we see muslims doing something stupid and still I don't see muslims denying their own. Muslims willl complain that extremists have corrupted the religion and their actions are not an example of good muslim behavior but I have yet to hear any muslim get on the news and claim that the extremists are not real muslims. Nor have I ever encountered muslims doing this IRL.
