In Matthew 7:21-31 it says, “Not everyone who says to me “Lord, Lord” will enter into the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in Heaven. Many will say to Me on that day, “Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?” Then I will tell them plainly, “I never knew you. Away from me you evil doers!”
What Jesus is saying is that there will be some “Christians” who are not really truly Christians. Think about the word Christian. It means Christ-like. If we are not obedient to His Word, how can we be Christ-like? 1 John 2:3-3 says, “We know that we have come to know him if we obey His commands. The man who says, “I know Him,” but does not what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But if anyone obeys His Word, God’s Love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in Him: Who ever claims to live in Him must walk as Jesus did.
Therefore, you cannot truly be a Christian unless you do what His Word directs you to do, or not do what He tells you not to do. According to James 2:17, “In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.”
This proves that only believing there is a God who sent His Son to die for our sins is not going to get you to heaven. It also takes doing His will. James 2:19 states, “You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that – and shudder.”
Our faith can only be justified through our works. Look at Abraham, the Bible says that, “his faith and his actions were working together and his faith was made complete by what he did.” (Referring to taking his son, Isaac, to the alter to be sacrificed.) We are no different. Life is a daily test of our faith. Will we say “yes Lord” or not? When he convicts us of something, will we act upon it, or ignore it? These are serious questions; your soul depends on your response.
There is one way to tell if someone is a Christian. The Bible teaches us that that one way is by the fruit of the Spirit. They are, in order, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. How can the Spirit of God be in you without your producing of these things? Galatians 5: 16-18 tells us, “So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other so that you do not do what you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law.”
This is telling us that if we have the Spirit of God inside of us, we will not do the things that we are not suppose to do. Things such as, “Sexual immorality, impurity, debauchery, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, fractions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and the like.” I’m not saying you will be perfect, no one is, but if you are led by the Spirit, these things will not be the things that the people around you label you as.
Look at your own life. Are you a true Christian? Do you have a personal relationship with the God that loves you? If you call yourself a born-again believer, are you acting thru your new self, or the old one? If your answer is no to any of these, you had better get your life with Him strait fast. He is coming soon.
