  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I do love the movie also, but Gladiator is my all-time fave for war and fight scenes. Ridley Scott is a wonderful director and I can't wait for Kingdom of Heaven. As for Troy though, yes it was a well-mastered epic, and I sincerely hope they make a rendition of the Odyssey to accompany it. The made for tv version told the story fairly well, but with the effects of today and if Wolfgang Peterson's touch was added, another of Homer's epics would surely come alive!

I thought Troy was entertaining but not as good as Gladiator or Braveheart. Both Gladiator and Braveheart had stronger, more believable stories and were made better IMO. I felt a little attachment to Hector and Achilles, but a HUGE attachment to Maximus and William Wallace. But as for fight scenes, that goes to Lord of the Rings in my book. :)

Gladiator has much better acting, not that Troy had bad acting it didn't, and Gladiator had better dialog.
Overall Gladiator is a better movie than Troy.
But Gladiator's fight scenes don't hold a candle to Troy's fight scenes.

In Gladiator the big fight needed a handicap for the hero to make it close.
In Troy, the big fight was on even ground, and it was the best scene in the movie.
Plus the battles were by far much larger than Gladiator's.
Gladiators animal scenes were computer generated, and full of flaws.

Yeah it would be hard to top LOTR fight scenes, but it takes 3 movies to do them all.

I might be mistaken, but I think Troy sets a movie record for most amount of bodys on one field of battle.
All of those ships, all of those men as far as the eye could see down the beach.
The orcs numbered 10,000, but I heard the number 50,000 on troy.
And LOTR doesn't have a one vs one battle as good as Hector and Achilles.

But then you have to figure in the Trees, and Elephant battles, and that Dragon.

Braveheart is my favorite movie. But they don't have the best fight scenes.

The great part about Gladiator and Braveheart is that they had the least CGI. Wolfgang Petersen had some pretty poor direction and Troy had mediocre cinematography, along with a mediocre score by James Horner. They should've just gone with Gabriel Yared's score. The acting isn't great, with the exception of Eric Bana, Rose Byrne, Sean Bean, and Peter O'Toole. It's an enjoyable popcorn flick, but not a great war epic.

Troy was such a missed opportunity. It could have been a truly great film but it I found it unmoving. It didn't help that Brad Pitt was in it who, for me, is not the best of actors. And when will Orlando Bloom learn a different expression to wear on his face apart from the three he already knows?

Troy was decent enough, but I felt as if the love story was tiring and unmoving to me. I felt that Gladiator was a superior film. And more superior than both of these I think (and probably controversially so), of the various ancient historical films, Alexander did a better job.

The first forty minutes of Alexander was undeniably terrible, but Oliver Stone did a splendid job with the other two hours of it and I felt as if it was an engaging film with some wicked battle scenes and moving speeches. I think that this film will stick out in my mind far more than Troy will.

Exactly what I was thinking! Hector was great though, best actor in the movie in my book.

In Return of the King alone, I think the battle at Pelennor Fields is the biggest battle ever. The 10,000 you referred to was at Helm's Deep in the The Two Towers. When you look at the size of the 10,000 and see how many of those you could fit into the HUGE army that was at Minas Tirith in the 3rd movie, I think you could get hundreds of thousands. And then you have all the horses of Rohan charging into that big mess to top it off. And the Mumakills(elephants), and the undead army. :D

But I think the best enemy army marching onto screen has to be in Braveheart at the beginning of the first big battle scene. It's so powerful.

I have to watch the first one again, I definitly remember that scene. But I think it was condensed, like all of it was trapped inside a valley or something.
Which would look like alot, but not as far as that beach scene.
And that last scene was done stupid. All the good guys would do was give the same speech over, and scream charge again, and run off to thier deaths and then some miracle would happen.
And ghosts don't count. :p

I own Braveheart, and I watched it again 3 weeks ago.
Rewatch that scene, there isn't but 300 to 500 men on the field, if that.
But they filmed it to look bigger than what it was, a kind of magic trick.
On Troy I think there were more ships in the water, than men on Bravehearts battles.

There is absolutly nothing wrong with computer graphics in a movie.
Only if the graphics suck, like in Jumanji, or those tigers in Gladiator.

I didn't like the score in Troy and felt that was only problem with this movie.

But if it gets ridiculous when it's excessive.

If you want to hear the original score by Gabriel Yared, IM me.

Then by that logic, having an "excessive" amount of real ships, and real men on the set is ridiculous.
That battle supposedly happened in history.

Like I said the only thing wrong with CG is if they are sloppy some how.

Movies like Jurasic Park, and LOTR are full of CG. And they turned out great!

In time when programmers and computer artists learn how to master CG, I feel we are going to see even more great epic movies that were never thought possible.

I've been a fan of Brad Pitt for sometime now and I also wanted to see it because I knew the story. Turned out to be such a great film.

I think Brad Pitt is an outstanding actor, who has proven himself time and again.
He comes across very strong on most of his movies, and I don't remember him ever waving in and out of his character.

Movies like Snatch, and Fight Club, then there is Seven.

He has shown the ability to adapt to different characters as well, like Meet Joe Black.

One scene that sticks out for me, was his role in True Romance as a stoner room mate.
That one scene where he is firing up a Honey Bear water bong, while the mafia comes in to ask him questions, was brilliant and flawless.
Actors who can pull off being drunk or on drugs, are special.
Like Doc Holiday played by Val Kilmer.
