Hello,
I am writing a 40 day devotional, and I right now I am using almost a 3:1 ratio for devotion to scripture (3 parts devotional writing to 1 part scripture). By the end of the devotional, I expect to have used almost 800-100 verses in all. It is important to me that I include the passage I am referring to in the devotional book. So, I'm looking for a way to get around copyright rules.
For example, NIV allows this:
Copyright Information
The NIV text may be quoted in any form (written, visual, electronic or audio), up to and inclusive of five hundred (500) verses without express written permission of the publisher, providing the verses do not amount to a complete book of the Bible nor do the verses quoted account for twenty-five percent (25%) or more of the total text of the work in which they are quoted.
When the NIV is quoted in works that exercise the above fair use clause, notice of copyright must appear on the title or copyright page or opening screen of the work (whichever is appropriate) as follows:
THE HOLY BIBLE, NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION®, NIV® Copyright © 1973, 1978, 1984, 2011 by Biblica, Inc. Used by permission. All rights reserved worldwide.
Clearly, I will be in violation of multiple rules.
I want to keep contemporary translations in it (No KJV or other expired copyright translation).
So here's my question. If I use NIV, NRSV, RSV, NASB, NLT, etc., and use different translations for each day, can I legally and ethically get around these copyright rules? Each passage would be marked with the translation, and I would include all appropriate copyright information at the beginning of the book.
I've written the first 3 days, I have all the notes and plans for the next 40, but I want to get this resolved in a hurry before I do too much more.
Thanks,
Giving
