Staged a terrorist incident to clear his path to power.

Wagner mercenary group says it will end coup attempt.

Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of the Wagner mercenary group, said his troops will turn around and start heading in the opposite direction from Moscow after advancing toward the Russian capital in a widely watched test of Vladimir Putin's authority over the country.

"We will turn around our columns and leave in the opposite direction to the field camps, according to the plan," he said in an audio statement Saturday afternoon.

Prigozhin said he is ending his insurrection because the moment arrived when Russian "blood might be shed." After negotiations with Belarus’ authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko, Prigozhin said he will turn his forces around.

what I'm reading is that Prigozhin is getting what he wanted. Shoigu and Gerasimov are getting replaced, Wagner is getting immunity and being redeployed to Africa instead of Ukraine, and Prigozhin is having charges dropped against him and he's going to Belarus.

Seems a little like Putin gave into the demands a bit too easy until you remember how many oligarchs and Putin critics have been poisoned or pushed out of windows.
... and Lukashenko is Putin's best ally.

I don't believe a word of what Putin says. I think it was a cunning plan. Putin wants Belarus to be part of the Russian federation, but Lukashenko wants to be his own dictator. Prigozhin is a dancer to Lukashenko, not to Putin in my estimation. But of course I may be wrong.
