Tricky Question, probably answered ages ago...

If a person believed in Jesus, with all his heart etc...
and oneday mental illness hit him, and he rampaged around, mowing people on the street...etc....

What is the situation in that? Jesus does say it's the end of a person that justifies the person, rather than what they've done in life...right?

Could you clarify? Are you asking what the persons salvation is based on?

Many times a mentally ill person won't have the capability of understanding who Jesus is and what it's all about. If mental illness has robbed this person of that capability then that person becomes as a small child to God.

In the end Jesus is concerned with out heart condition and it sounds like this person had his heart in the right place before mental illness ravaged his mind.

Cut and dried I'd say that person is still a child of God. It is a sad end to come to (mental illness) but it is not a loss of salvation, just mental abilities.

Well the tricky question is, when they go into the mental state, and they don't believe in God anymore, and we say they go to heaven. Doesn't this imply that people who worked hard for God for 70yrs can just relax afterwards and not believe in him anymore and still go to heaven?....

I think theres more to this, I'm thinking mental illness could be God's hand by saying...you've done your job on earth, I'll be taking you up as your spirit in this time frame before you had the mental illness....

Or as you'd suggested, the person himself has hidden within the core, and hence God takes the core of the person.

I know this is very very weird, but it's always in my head.

what our beloved Beckjhn has written is surely true. our merciful Father would desire only the healing and restoration of such a one. When our Master walked the earth one of the people He healed were people vexed with disorders of their mind.
NKJ Matthew 4:24 "Then His fame went
throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all
sick people who were afflicted with various
diseases and torments, and those who were
demon-possessed, epileptics, and paralytics; and
He healed them."
And read what our beloved writer of Hebrews

NAS Hebrews 13:8 "Jesus Christ is the same
yesterday and today, yes and forever."
So Jesus is still healing us today through his word and His touch. So if you are troubled or know of one who is reach out to Jesus Christ our Savior and whereever you are He will meet you there .
