What exactly IS it and does the LCMS believe in it?
The Tribulation Period is the last 7 years on earth before Jesus returns at His Second Coming. What exactly IS it and does the LCMS believe in it?
So what exactly IS the “tribulation”? And does the LCMS believe in it?Lutherans teach that our Lord Jesus Christ “will come again to judge the living and the dead” (Apostles’ Creed).
As Scripture teaches, Christ will come once at the end of time, not to "rapture” believers away from earth, nor to establish an earthly kingdom, nor to begin a thousand year reign on earth, but to separate the believers from the unbelievers (Matthew 25:32–33) and to give each of them their eternal reward or punishment.
On the Last Day, those who have rejected Christ, along with the devil and his evil angels, “will go away to eternal punishment” while those who trust in Christ and His forgiveness, life, and salvation will go “into eternal life” (Matthew 25:46).

The LCMS believes we have been in the end times since Jesus ascended. You are in the end times now. You will experience tribulation in your lifetime. Hence John 16:33
The Revelation does seem to indicate it will get really bad in the last few years before Jesus returns, but the LCMS doesn't treat tribulation the way most American Christians do. Evangelicals treat it as if it's a thing, an ontological category, some predetermined, predefined historical era sandwiched between the rapture and the second coming. If you want to see the silliness of these beliefs, try to sit through the Left Behind movies.
American Christianity focuses on the rapture, the tribulation, etc. WAY TOO MUCH. And it freaks people out. Maybe that's the case with you.
The Revelation was not given so people could obsess and Jerry Jenkins could sell books. It was meant to be a comfort. The short version of The Revelation is: Yeah, bad stuff happens. And, yeah, it may seem like things are getting worse. But God still loves you, God is still in control, and Christ is victorious. That's what you should focus on: Christ.
Read John 16:33 over and over again.
