To add to what I just said, it seems that people tend to value animals tend to hold certain ones as more precious. We step on ants all the time. We run over frogs in the road and think nothing of it. But if a pet dies or an animal of an almost extinct species dies, people tend to care. I think this way, because I don't value some pest animals over my personal comfort. I'd kill a spider over letting it run free in my house or setting it loose. And if it's not harming the earth's ecosystem and it's not cruel to the animal, it's fine with me if they die.
