  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Can you be a little more specific? How we "feel" about it is a pretty broad question. :)

Speaking for myself, my "feelings" (i.e., my "thoughts") are that I believe in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist and in the supernatural change that takes place in the bread and wine during consecration, changing its substance (but not its appearance) into the Body and Blood of our Lord, Jesus Christ. In other words, my "feelings" are that I believe in transubstantiation, exactly as taught by the Catholic Church. As to the "why" of it . . . I believe ("feel") this way because I believe it to be true.

It is a essential part of our Faith, a glorious mystery and gift from our Lord. Believing and accepting transubstantion means that we believe Christ's own words to be literal, not believing would put us in the category with those who did not believe, those who turned and walked away because they did not understand His words and thought them too hard to accept.

Well said... It is also the foundation of the Mass, and a MAJOR part of our faith... we receive the Blessed Sacrement... We LITERALLY Receive Him in Us.

"I in them, and they in Me, both perfectly as One"

This can only be possible through transubstantiation.:)

That's why we can adore the Blessed Sacrement... We are adoring Christ Himself!

And Jesus clearly said basically that you must "eat me" which is why the crowd was so turned off. And He did not just say it one time. Furthermore if the meaning was figurative, that He just meant He really only wanted us to do a ceremony that symbolized Him, then why would He allow so many to walk away over a simple misunderstanding? Clearly He knew what people were thinking. From everything else we read about Him, He would have stopped them and corrected the misunderstanding. Even the disciples said this is a hard thing. No one there mistook His meaning. It was literal, not symbolic.

Hi Viperblue

I too would like to know more about what you mean by "how you feel and why". Transubstantiation is a way that we attempt to explain the Mystery of the Eucharist. What we know by faith is that the bread and wine change into the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of the Lord. He is there completely, though it appears to remain bread and wine.

The explanation of transubstantiation is a particularly philosophical one. It is based on Aristotelian thought, and requires a bit of knowledge of terms. I'm not sure whether you're asking if we all believe in the transubstantiation explanation, or if you understand how it "works", or if you're asking whether we believe in the Real Presence?
