  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I was reading the book "The Catholic Home: Celebrations and Traditions for Holidays, Feast Days, and Every Day" by Meredith Gould and it got me thinking of my lenten fast this year.
She mentioned that at one time you gave up butter, eggs, fat, milk, and cheese, and meat. Has anyone done this fast for lent? Is the fat she referring to just animal fats or fat in general? I will probably at least abstain from meat all of lent, but I was wondering if others have tried this or other more traditional fasts.

This is the normal Orthodox fast. We do it every Wednesday & Friday (with a few exceptions), the 6 weeks before Nativity, the 50 days before Pascha, during the Apostles Fast in June, and the 2 week Dormition fast in August, plus a few other days, such as the Beheading of St. John the Baptist, and the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

The "fat" she mentions may be "oil", as in the Orthodox fast.

Thanks for all the responses. I like the idea of changing my diet during Lent. I am so much more aware of God on Fridays, because I think of Him everytime I cook a meal.
I believe the pre-vatican II lent fast was fasting on all days of lent and abstain and fast on Fridays, but I could be wrong. Does anyone know the reasoning behind slackening the lenten fast?
