I personally like TA better. TA has 3D graphics, lots of different units, and lots of cool defenses. You can also build super long range cannons, and nukes. The expansion also adds a lot, and you can download extra units. The population limit is higher in TA than in Starcraft, and you can select/move/group any number of units at a time. You can even hit like alt-A or something to select every unit you own, then just attack =).

Starcraft is also a good game. It is extremely well balanced (almost ridiculously), and probably requires more "skill" to play. It has less units, and units with specific strengths and weaknesses. The big thing I disliked about Starcraft was that you could only select like 20 units at a time. So, if you wanted to send a big attack, you had to divide them into subgroups =(.

I also want to mention that the TA sequel "TA:Kingdoms", was NOT as good as the original...

This thread is just screaming TA vs SC.

Anyway, yes, TA: K was utter...'bad stuff.' Chris Taylor had left, so they had no one who really knew RTS.

Anyway, of course, I'll say TA, for obvious reasons.

Graphics-TA
Interface-TA (a bit customisable)
Campaign-SC
Moddability-TA
Fanbase-SC
Multiplayer-I'd say TA but SC has a larger multiplayer fanbase. However, I'd definately say TA's multiplayer experience is better
Map Editor-SC
Unit Limit-TA has a larger one (250 default) but buildings are included. One point for everything. Also, if you edit the INI file, you can set it to 500. Quite easy and harmless.
Realism-TA
Balance-Oohh...I probably have to go with SC on this one. TA is very balanced, but SC had a harder time on doing it with 3 races.
Storyline-SC

And a completely pointless one...

Universe strength-TA by a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooong shot.

Gameplay is just a comibination of all, so I won't comment. Although TA for me is much better.

There is actually a 5k unit patch out there too. :) I've used it and it works, but when you start getting more than 1k units, they start getting really badly behaved.

Total Annihilation can get really boring. When did they say the sequel would come out? Never? Oh well.
Starcraft has a good story, but the 12-unit limit sucks, and the terrans can't heal their infantry until Brood War, and neither can the Protoss.

But...
TA is better.

TA is better.
The sequal is only spiritual. It was announced a few months ago by Chris Taylor at his company Gas Powered Games to IGN.

TA had some truly stunning imbalances. The flash tank required a whole extra unit added to the game simply to fix it. That screams "finger in the dike" to me. That being said, it's an enjoyable game. Starcraft, in my opion, is superior due to the increased versitility of the units (most of them have some special ability) and the tactical nature of the game, which I find superior to TA's lack of tactics (tactics in TA are much more basic then SCs, and rarely utilized).
