  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

A lot of poor people's houses got badly messed up in south Minneapolis.

While John Piper yammers on about teh Ghey, I see little compassion for those whose lives have been torn up.

How about Christians shut up about teh Ghey for like five minutes and help their neighbors get the fallen trees off their roofs.

Nobody said there has never been a twister in Minnesota, I was only saying that they are rare, from what I read, in Minneapolis. In fact, I just found a story that says there had not been one in downtown Minneapolis in over 100 years, until today. I would be willing to bet that nobody reading this was even born that long ago. Here is a link...

MinnPost - What's bigger than Brett Favre? A downtown twister, but just barely

Powerderhorn Park neighborhood got hit in 1981.

^You could use the same erroneous line of thinking against any verse in all of scripture to twist and turn it and throw it out. At that point, you are just picking and choosing which verses you want to follow.

If you believe that my line of thinking regarding the importance of context and the centrality of the gospel in understanding the bible is erroneous, then your theology is clearly not Lutheran.

I also like the way you only picked on one of the verses. Go ahead and try to figure out how to throw the others out that I posted as well. There are a lot more that I could post. God expresses the same attitude about homosexual acts throughout the Bible, spanning centuries and many various cultures.

Your response to me only mentioned one verse. Most of my response to you focused on the proper way to read the bible in general, with only a few passing remarks about the (only) passage you cited in your earlier response to me. And, even insofar as my few comments on the verse itself were concerned, I was not attempting to throw it out, as you put it. In a different thread, Forscher has posted two excellent resources on understanding the sexuality debate from a Lutheran context; have you read them? I'll repost the links here:

Reformation Resources: Law/Promise Hermeneutics & the Godly Secularity of Sex

Augsburg Confessional Theology and the ELCA Sexuality Debate

I really cannot recommend these resources highly enough, and agree wholeheartedly with both their methodology and their conclusions. They do deal with all of the verses you've posted here, in both your responses to me and D.W., and I will let my agreement with Rev. Schroeder stand as a sufficient response to your line of questioning. Should you wish to discuss these two excellent writings further (after having actually read them, of course), I'd be glad to have some follow-up discussion on them.

How is that for looking at something with historical criticisim?

It's not. At all. Frankly, it only leads one to wonder whether you truly understand what historical criticism even is.

Of course, you're absolutely right. The fact that conservative Christian commentators are prattling on about a Midwestern summer tornado as a so-called "clear sign from God" is nonsensical enough on its face. The callousness toward those who had absolutely nothing to do with the ELCA CWA but who were still affected by the torndado, though, is just downright shameful.

That homosexuality thing is so shameful to me as a Lutheran and ELCA member.

Since I came from an atheist background (USSR) I am well familiar with normal post-Soviet atheists who are not ex-anything, normal people who raise families, believe in Jesus as a historical figure, most respect him as a philosopher and so forth.

So, these guys are amazed at us ... the Christians.

"And you are preaching at us?" (laughter).

I am ashamed - what a poor testimony.

Does anyone know what happened on Friday (?) when they would vote on same-sex living agreements of clergy?

All 4 resolutions passed.

If you are wondering about weather, reports stated a rainbow formed at LTSG right after the last vote, pretty much as nonsensical as the tornado being causal, but likely wont get much radio or blog play.
