I need some tips on overcoming fear before/during witnessing.

Who are you witnessing to? Your family, your friends, or just strangers.

I ask that only because different people need different approaches.

One thing to remember is that it is the Holy Spirit that convicts, we are just the messenger. But for the Holy Spirit to use us effectly, we must have our hearts clean before God (that is confess and repent of any unconfessed sins) and we must immerse ourselves in prayer. We ought to pray for the Holy Spirit power to speak the gospel effectively and pray for compassion for those that we are witnessing to, pleading God for their salvation. As for being nervous and scared, the disciples prayed for boldness in Acts 4:31:

"And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness."

In preparation, it helps if you have the plan of salvation memorized. I usually go with the Romans Road, which consisted of just 5 verses:

"As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:" - Romans 3:10

"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;" - Romans 3:23

"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." - Romans 6:23

"But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." - Romans 5:8

"For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." - Romans 10:13

I use these to explain four important points:

1) We are sinners - (Romans 3:10, 23)
2) Our sin leads to death, spiritually and physically - (Romans 6:23)
3) Christ died for our sins - (Romans 6:23, 5:8)
4) We must call upon Him (Jesus) to save us - (Romans 10:13)

If we would memorize these fairly easy five verses, then we will be better equipt to explain the Gospel and will know what to say, instead of stumbling over our own words.

Lastly, your own testamony is powerful. Tell others how God saved you.

Hi! I would pray and ask to be the vessel of Jesus that whatever came out of my mouth would be from Him even if I did not completely understand the meaning and even if I sound a little foolish. Usually the worst that will happen to us while witnessing is a little embarassment and this is a small price to pay to bring a person to the Lord.

I would pray that those I witness to have open hearts to accept Jesus.

Sometimes, it is up to us just to plant the seed. Others may come along to water it or we can and before you know it, you have a sprout, then strong roots and then a healthy, thriving plant.

Take a deep breath, and do it.

Our job is to obey Christ, witness, and witness as effectively as possible. We are not responsible for people's response.

Usually the best way to overcome fear is to face it head on. But if there are certain areas that you feel unprepared for, maybe we could figure out solutions to more specific issues?

Hey, we all go through it.
Go to your local Christian book store and get an easy tract with the plan of salvation drawn out on it with scripture. Go over them to yourself until feel like you know it pretty well. Practice on family using the tract in your hand as a guide. If your family aren't christians then all the better. But use the tract and have the people read along with you. It's easy, really. Still stepping out the first time is hard, but the Lord knows that. Remember the people you are witnessing to don't realize you are nervous, so go for it. When you are through, let them have the tract. Seed sown!

Being nervous or scared is normal.The advice to pray lots is very important.You can pray for God to take away your fear too. And you must have something to share,You can't give what you haven't got.
And it does get easier the more you do it.

First, Pray, pray, pray, pray.....

Some advice:
I used to skydive, stopped a few years ago, (~2000 jumps)
Everyone always asked me how I over came the fear of jumping out of a perfectly good airplane.
Faith and Movement.
You have faith that the parachute will open and you jump.
Fear tends to swallow you up when you stand still... as soon as you start to move the fear starts to disapear.
Not because it isn't there, but because you focus has changed. When I go out, the fear shows up but I know as soon as strike up a conversation it gets pushed aside and my focus becomes getting the message of the gospel out.
Like passing out a tract.... the first is the hard one, then it becomes a lanslide and you turn into a tracting machine.
