I’m not sure about his relationship with the Sound recordist guys mum, but as far as I know he did have a child which was put up for adoption, I have fallen of the story a bit in the last week or so, so maybe some one can clarify more?

yeah, i think it was the sound recordist that was up for adoption. it jsut turned out tony wasn't the father. kinda feel sorry for him in a way, but then again, he made a concious decision to have sex before marriage.

I'm aware the sound recordist bloke isn't his son...but Tony Abbott has been living down the fact he had fathered a child who was adopted-out for years.

It's obvious he was involved in a pre-marital sexual relationship...father or not.

However, his ex-girlfriend has admitted that while they were involved in the relationship Abbott insisted on not using contraception because of the Pope's decree on the issue.

Hi,

I don't know what to make of this, especially when it was reported in Wednesdays papers that Daniel O'Connor was not his child.

My only wish is that the media will just leave this matter and Mr. Abbott alone and let Kathy Donelly and Daniel get on with the rest of their lives.

There are far more pressing issues to be concerned about in the world than some klutzy politician's supposed love child. Big deal!

What's wrong with having sex before marriage? Just a question.

I agree.

I also wanted to add, that everyone has sinned. What makes having sex outside marriage any worse than other sins, such as lying, cheating, stealing etc.

I just wish everyone would leave the entire saga alone! It has made her out to be promiscuous (imagine what that is going to do to her family, especially her children), made Tony Abbott out to be a laughing stock, and as for the young man - the poor thing. I'd HATE my personal family life to be dragged through the papers like this.

What's really ticking me off now is that people are criticising Mr Abbott about his abortion stance, because of this. He himself he didn't want this to be used in support of his anti-abortion stance - he stated he was anti-abortion LONG before a child was thought to be created (FWIW - he THOUGHT he'd had a child, that child was Mr O'Connor, it's only been 2 weeks since he found out the child he thought was his, wasn't)...

It makes me sick how many people are ridiculing the poor guy over this. I had premarital sex, a lot on this forum did as well - most of us very rarely get the judgement that this man has had to suffer.

Why do people always assume Christians to be 'mini-gods' when it comes to sinful behaviour, and can't understand that we are just as human as everyone else, and make mistakes like everyone else?

I just can't stand the thought that a politician's (or anyone's) teenage sex life made front page news in the "Australian" let alone the other papers, for about a week. Sheesh was there nothing important going on in the country.... makes me feel like a voyeur.... and it's not fair to anyone involved. It says nothing about who he is now or what he believes now anyway, (if the justification for making it "newsworthy" was to tie it into the abortion debate) - and come ON, front page news? I am with Sasch on this one. And then it becomes front page news for another couple days that there was a mistake..... I read that and thought, "can we get on with hearing about what else is happening in the world or the country, please?" So I stopped reading the paper til it went away. I don't want to know, so I "voted" with my page turning finger.

And on the irony of sticking to one rule but not the other (premarital sex being against the catholic beliefs just as much as birth control is) - maybe he agreed with one, but not the other... or maybe he didn't want to break two rules..... or maybe they didn't plan it.... but definitely, it's not my business. There must have been a reason, but I am sure it was as run of the mill as the reasons why all of us knowingly sin and do stuff that is against our own beliefs, every day. That is ironic indeed, that we all do it, and that Mr Abbott is not the exception to the rule. I wish he was. I wish we had reason to be surprised when a Christian sins. Reality is, we are all human, and broken, and have issues and fears and insecurities and doubts, and we often act out of those even when we know better and hate ourselves for it. We should all be on the front page - which means none of this is newsworthy at all.

And I really hope this hasn't damaged Tony Abbott's faith, but instead made it stronger and reinforced grace to him. Or maybe shown him depths to grace and God's love that he hasn't seen before. Then it would be worth it to have the nation focussing on this, and so many of us feeling like voyeurs!
