Tongues

Hi Guys

Please be gentle as this is my first post!
I have been praying to be given the gift of tongues for a while now, and although I have a good relationship with God I haven't been blessed with the gift. I do believe that I have been blessed in other ways but feel quite disapointed that I can't quite edify myself in this way.

Is there anyone else out there who feels that same?

The gift of tongues comes with the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. But remember, the giving of messages in tongues (something different) is not a gift God gives everyone. We all can have a prayer language. But pray for the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.

You must have complete surrender to God for this to take place. Sometimes, it is an emotional high, ecstatic utterance. But sometimes, it's a quiet peaceful speaking too. I know when I received it, I was on my face, asking God, "What do I need to do? Should I start babbling? I don't understand." (I had never been in a Pentecostal church, so had no idea!!) I tried saying a few words, but nothing.

Then I heard in my spirit something along the lines of "Are you finished?" I told God, Yes. I acknowledge that I can't do this. I gave up completely. It wasn't until then that I noticed words wanting out of my mouth. I almost fought it, but gave in, and spoke. It was amazing, especially for someone who had never heard it before!!

But still, it took complete, total surrender, plus obedience to speak when prompted. Of course, the enemy tried to tell me it was fake, but there was no doubt in the changes that came over me and my life immediately.

Don't fret. Everyone I know (who speaks in tongues) has a different story and timetable. It is a prayer language, not a mark of spirituality.

Ask God to pray through you effectively, and it won't matter whether it's tongues or English. Let the focus be the prayer, not the mode, and it will come eventually.

Don't feel bad, I was in your same position, and in a certain sense I still am.
I've prayed for the baptism of the Holy Spirit for some time now as well, and I was anxious and nervous to do so, and in some cases, concentrating intensely enough to see if I had 'tongue-esque' words coming out of my mouth.

But then I learned to be more patient and to wait on God, and that's where I currently am now.

God will bring it in His own time, when you're ready. That's all any of us can do. Just keep praying.
