  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Do all Christians speak in tongues, cast out demons, etc.? All the "gifts" of being baptized in the Holy Ghost?

I have not done this since becoming a Christian, and a pastor I know is saying that I am not saved because I have not spoken in tongues. This scares me.

What exactly is the "baptism of the Holy Ghost anyway?" In simple terms please. :)

This is an all denominational forum so I'm sure you will get as many answers as there are denominations, but since it's also a no-debate forum any topics that are commonly viewed as debatable issues should be addressed in the relative forums :) If you'd like to post your views ....

Yeah, well I'll be real honest here. I had no idea what forum to post this in-the new layout really confuses me and I was very lost. I'm very sorry that I posted in the wrong place-it was simple questions-I didn't realize that they were "debatable"- I was not intending them to be. I'm a new Christian, and no one seems to be able to answer these questions for me. Again, I apologize.

Hey, if you want to know where to ask this question you can post on the "Spirit-Filled - Pentacostal/Charismatic" forum under "Faith Groups" in ChristianForums. You could also just message me, and I will tell you what I believe. The pentacostal denomination believes as a matter of dogma that a person must recieve the Baptism in the Holy Spirit and speak in tongues to be saved. What denomination is the pastor from? Anyway...just in my opinion, I don't believe exactly that, though I believe I have recieved both the Baptism in the Holy Spirit and the gift of tongues for private edification. Feel free to message me, and I will do what I can to answer any questions.

God Bless!

You do not have to speak in tongues to be saved. Judgement and declaration of Salvation are for no man to decide for another.. it is personal between you and GOD. If you have accepted and understand Jesus died for your sins and repent through him.. you are saved. If you do not or are not sure.. continue asking questions here and keep talking to GOD.

1Co 12:28-31 And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret But eagerly desire the greater gifts.

1Co 14:5 I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified.

Baptism is showing your obedience to GOD.. it is your pledge.

1Pe 3:21 and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a good conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ

Be Blessed

Thanks for the replies. I've been talking to a preacher who tells me that it is not enough to just believe and ask Jesus into your heart and be baptized. He says that you have to be baptized by the Holy Ghost and Fire.

I could not get him to give me a direct answer that I could understand, but I took it to mean that baptism of the Holy Ghost is the manifestation of gifts such as speaking in tongues.

He said that water baptism is meaningless. I don't agree, but am just a babe in Christ, so I didn't have the words to give a good reply. He said that Jesus does not save, and talked about blood, covenant, and God being fire, earth, water, and dust, and that we have to be baptized into all those to be truly saved.

He said when Jesus was on earth, he never saved a single person. I did not understand. The only verses he gave me was Hebrews 12 and 13. Ephesians 4:5, and 1 Corinthians 1:17 I read these and still do not understand.

Jesus said that He is "the Way, the Truth, and the Life; and that nobody comes to the Father except by Me"~John 14:6. By Jesus' death and reserection we can come to the Father as His children, pure and holy, through our faith in Christ Jesus as our Lord and Savior. Jesus is the one who baptises us with the Holy Spirit, and water baptism is a sign and symbol of your devotion to God. I personally believe that the water baptism and Spirit baptism are usually seperate events, and that water baptism is a sign of commitment and Spirit baptism is an event of the release of the gifts of the Spirit in a person. I believe that neither of those are a requirement for salvation, but they are something that should be sought after and done in the life of every believer.

In reference to Ephesians 4:5, I believe that this is in reference to how we are all baptised into one body, the body of Christ. The word 'baptism' is referring to us being joined as one body through the Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 12:13 "13For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink."
Also, the 'one Lord' part. God is three persons in one (if you believe in the trinity, which I do)-God the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit; three beings that are one God.

I am not sure what he is trying to say with the 1 Corinthians 1:17 verse though..

"7Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good."~1 Corinthians 12:7

Every person in the body of Christ has been given at least one gift of the Holy Spirit. That gift(s) isn't always one that is mentioned directly in 1 Corinthians 12. For instance, I have a gift for music. That isn't mentioned in that place in scripture, but I believe God has given me a spiritual gift for it. Also, since we all have the same Spirit within us, we all can employ any of the gifts of the Spirit as the Lord wills. Though every person is given specific gifts that help them do the ministry that God calls each person to do. The reason that it might seem like you don't have a gift is that those gift(s) have not been released in you through the baptism in the Spirit. You have the gifts already because you have the Holy Spirit in you through faith in Christ, but the gifts may not be readily accessable for you to use in God's work. If you are open to it, ask God in faith for the baptism in the Holy Spirit and the release of any gifts that He has given you. A good site with information on how to recieve it is:

ttp://personal-communication.net.nz/baptism.htm

*add an "h" to the beginning since I cant really put links on until I have 50 posts

I also believe that God allows any christian to have the gift of tongues for *private* use if they are open to it, though for some it is a bit hard at first. You can also ask God for discernment on what gifts that He has given you, and remember it's all about the Giver of the gifts and not the gifts themselves. Though God loves giving good things to His children!!

~God Bless
