Hi all

I see that tongues seem to be confusing to most people. I don't think it should be. The Holy spirit is not a spirit of confusion!
I think one of the reasons for confusion is that people get this tongues thing from the wrong side.
Tongues is a gift from the Holy-Spirit. So before you get to the part of prophecy healing tongues ect. First get the part about being spirit filled.

(Maybe Somebody else can post more on that)

I treid to find some scriptures about tongues and the gifts of the spirit more in general. (this is by no ways garunteed to be complete or correct)

I think this is a wonderful and much misunderstood topic. Part of the reason it is so difficult for some to understand is that very often people will take every scripture in the Bible with the word "tongues" in it and try to apply it to the Holy Spirit enabled gift "diversities of tongues." Relatively few people actually have this gift of the Holy Spirit. But all believers can pray in tongues. Jesus said we could.
Once we rightly divide the Word, and separate those passages that rever to "Diversities of tongues" from "prayer language tongues", then many of the problems are solved and things begin to fall into place.

You have the right to receive the Holy Ghost because Jesus prayed for you to receive Him.
And I will pray the Father,and he shall give you another Comforter,that he may abide with you forever (John 14;16).

The Greek word for Comforter,parakletos,means one called alongside to help,to defend as an attorney.It also means another one just like me.The same word means advocate in this Scripture;

My little children,these things write I unto you,that ye sin not.And if any man sin,we have an advocate with the Father,Jesus Christ the righteous (1 John 2;1).

Christ is our advocate in Heaven,the Holy Ghost is our advocate on earth.
The Holy Ghost has been given to assist us in a variety of ways.He helps to guide us;

John 16;13-Howbeit when he,the Spirit of truth,is come,he will guide you into all truth;for he shall not speak of himself;but whatsoever he shall hear,that shall he speak;and he will shew you things to come.
He assures us that we are children of God.

Romans 8;16-The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit,that we are the children of God.

He gives us power to witness;
Acts 1;8-But ye shall receive power,after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you and ye shall be witness unto me both in Jerusalem,and in all Judaea,and in Samaria,and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

They Spoke With Other Tongues
They began to speak with other tongues (Acts 2;4).
Tongues in this passage is the Greek word glossa,which simply means a language.
Devout Jews from every nation had gathered in Jerusalem for Pentecost.When the Holy Spirit was poured out and the disciples began to speak in tongues,it caused quite a stir.
