For those who believe that speaking in tongues is ok and a good thing -
I was baptized as a baby (sprinkled) in either a United Methodist or a Lutheran church, I'm not sure which, I'd have to check. I've not been baptized underwater since I've been old enough to make my own decisions.
About a year ago I received the holy ghost and spoke in tongues. My sister says it usually happens baptism first, then holy ghost/tongues.
Is that how it's happened for most everybody here? Anybody gotten them switched around like me?
Sincerely,
Summer

This is not meant to spark a debate. I am just curious what different people believe on the subject of speaking in tongues, and why. (please include scripture references to support what you're saying.) If your post about your own beliefs starts to get a little I'm-right-and-anyone-who-believes-otherwise-is-a-big-doodoohead, please press cancel and try again later. ;)
Thanks :)
Looking forward to seeing what everybody says,

Summer

Hello Summer23.

There are two manifestations that people refer to as tongues.
The first one is the manifestation of "diversities of tongues" (1 cor 12) that is from the Holy Spirit only through someone who has this gift, and only when He wills. This accounts for a very small percentage of the tongues we hear. It must always have an interpretation, and is almost always directed at a congregation. It is always the Spirit speaking to us. It, together with interpretation is the functional equivilant to prophecy.

The second type is what most of us manifest. This is the language that issues forth from the spirit of Christ in you. This is the spirit you received when you were born again. This is the spirit that replaced the old dead spirit you had as an unregenerate. This spirit can speak. It can and does pray. It can say "Abba". Paul said "when I pray in an unknow tongue, MY spirit prays..."(1 Cor 14:!4) This also the tongues Jesus said that we (as believers) would all manifest. "they shall speak with new tongues". Look at that word "new." For a long time I thought that just meant "new to me." On closer study, I believe it means totally new... as in nobody anywhere has ever heard it or spoken it before. It is unique to you and only God understands it.

The link below will take you to a website that will teach you about these things, as well as how you can learn to prophesy out of the same spirit of Christ that is in you. Like Paul said, we can "all prophesy one by one that all may learn"
Peace

Summer23 -

You said you received the Holy Ghost baptism before water baptism. This also happen in the bible.

Act 10:44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all them that heard the word.

Act 10:45 And they of the circumcision that believed were amazed, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Act 10:46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,

Act 10:47 Can any man forbid the water, that these should not be baptized, who have received the Holy Spirit as well as we?

Act 10:48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.

In this event a group of Gentiles received the Holy Ghost baptism before the water baptism.

I don't think it really matters which way. From my own experience, as a baby I was sprinkled too. But never have been baptized underwater (immersion). I still haven't because I received the Holy Spirit in a small Full Gospel Church in Okinawa. That's been 7, almost 8 years ago and I don't feel compelled to get baptized by immersion, at least yet.

But if I was a member in a Church that said I needed to be baptized, even though I'm baptized in the Holy Spirit with the gift of tongues, I wouldn't refuse. Would seem redundant to me but if you feel you need to get baptized, go ahead, I see nothing wrong with it.

But your sister is right, usually a person is baptized first. Remember, Baptism is for the forgiveness of sins. Being washed clean and being identified with Christ. It's public.

But either way, I always go back to the thief on the cross, he didn't have time to get baptized and Jesus said he was going to be in Paradise with Him.

Hope that helped somewhat. :|

hi summer,
my experience was the same. I spoke in tongues before i even knew what it was. I was a Christian at the time, but not as I am now. I did not even know people spoke in this "other" language. All I know is that I had experienced so much love and power at the time, I couldn't understand what was happening.

(I had not been water baptized either)

Summer23,

same here. I was infant baptised in a methodist church. Only at about age 30/31 I received the Spirit baptism and spoke in tongues.:p Then about 2 years later, I was water baptised by full immersion.

The order really doesnt matter, as in Cornelius case. They were born again and Spirit baptised simultaneously, then they were water baptised, which also proves water baptism is not a work FOR salvation. :)

there are some other tongues threads here. do check them out. :)

This has been a really helpful thread for me, everybody. I really appreciate it. Hearing about the similar experiences that some of you have had, as well as the scriptures mentioned, have made me feel a little more "ok" with my experience. For me, it was honestly a little rattling. Prior to my first time, I didn't even believe it was real, really. I don't know what it was, but I said, ok God, I don't know if this is real, and honestly I find it hard to believe, but... well, if it is, and if it's of you, I want to try it. So I just sort of handed the whole thing over to Him, and that's what happened.

Anyway, thank you *so* much to everybody who responded. I think I'm going to print this out so I can study it a little more.

Sincerely,
Summer

Something the Spirit has been impressing upon me lately is that God, in his omnipotent wisdom and foresight can work on you, in you or through you whenever and however the moment may require. Chronology isn't as important as being in the Word, communing with our Savior and seeking God's will moment by moment.
All else is either formality or foolishness.
Your Brother
John
