A friend and I were discussing praying in tongues. He told me that Satan doesn't understand what we're saying when we pray in tongues. Is this true? (If so, is there any Scripture to support this?)

I had never heard this before, but if true, it surely makes for a wonderful Gift to have!:clap:

Paul said that when speaking in tongues, we speak not to men but unto God.

and he said that men did not understand because in the spirit he speaks mysteries unto God..

to me.. mysteries implies that only God knows.

i think that since men are influenced by satan in their reasoning.. that satan cannot understand what is said.

and i believe that its one of the reasons why he fights against tongues as much as he does.

I don't know either, but anyway why worry?

If the devil can hear and understand our prayers, whether in our native tongue or any other, or even written in text as we gather here, it must just freak him out -

He'd hear us praising and worshipping God, putting our trust in Him, loving Him, glorifying Him, receiving His love and power - a mighty army preparing and equipping against him!

That must be really scary for the devil.
In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if he had to cover his ears and cringe in a corner! :D

Psalm 56

1 Be merciful to me, O God, for men hotly pursue me;
all day long they press their attack.

2 My slanderers pursue me all day long;
many are attacking me in their pride.

3 When I am afraid,
I will trust in you.

4 In God, whose word I praise,
in God I trust; I will not be afraid.
What can mortal man do to me?

5 All day long they twist my words;
they are always plotting to harm me.

6 They conspire, they lurk,
they watch my steps,
eager to take my life.

7 On no account let them escape;
in your anger, O God, bring down the nations.

8 Record my lament;
list my tears on your scroll —
are they not in your record?

9 Then my enemies will turn back
when I call for help.
By this I will know that God is for me.

10 In God, whose word I praise,
in the LORD, whose word I praise-

11 in God I trust; I will not be afraid.
What can man do to me?

12 I am under vows to you, O God;
I will present my thank offerings to you. 13 For you have delivered me from death
and my feet from stumbling,
that I may walk before God
in the light of life.

God is great!:clap:

God bless you, love Sue

1Cr 13:1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become [as] sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

If Lucifer was and still is an angel, then if God so will us to speak a tongue of angels (that Lucifer would understand), I'm sure He is able. It would be a terrible rebuke to Lucifer, don't ya think. He would be getting "told off" by the LORD's greatest creation in his own tongue :)

Satan is not omnipresent so the chances of you ever coming in contact with him are small.

You may find some other fallen angel lingering around, but they generally cannot stand the word, praise, worhsip, the name of Jesus etc. So they flee!

Dont worry:thumbsup:

I used to be in a charismatic church that constantly, constantly rebuked satan. They saw satan behind every bush and lingering in every shadow. I brought up the subject one day that I really didn't think satan would come around and take the chance on a Christian rebuking and resisting him. They acted like I was the ultimate heretic. They just attributed way too much power to the enemy's side.

There is no scripture to support the view that Satan can't understand tongues.

In fact, Scripture is clear that many times 'tongues' are earthly languages--just unknown to the speaker, such as on the day of Pentecost. If Satan knows/understands the human language being spoken, then he would know/understand when someone speaks that language "in tongues".

I believe that most of our problems are caused by our flesh.. and our straying out from under the umbrella of God's protection..

Sometimes as TD Jakes says we "play pattycake" with the Devil.. little by little.. pulling us out from our circle of protection.. without us ever knowing that we're moving..

A Pastor at one of the churches I go to teaches that there is the "Gift of Tongues" that is the tongue spoken on Pentecost.. and tongues that is our "prayer language" ..

Rom 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helps our infirmities. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

And that this is the tongues that the devil can not understand..

It's interesting, and possibly helpful to this discussion, that you mention the difference between the Gift of Tongues and tongues as a prayer language. I didn't specify it in my opening post, but my question is actually reference tongues, as a prayer language.

So, if I'm reading your post right, it sounds like your pastor teaches that it is our prayer language that the devil cannot understand, specifically, when the Spirit "makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered". (Am I reading that right?)

On just a practical level, this would make sense to me. Afterall, how "could" anyone but God understand the sighs and groanings ...

Thank you for mentioning this :)

When we pray in tounges the Holy Spirit is praying. If satan does understand, I would say he tries his best not to hear it. Because he knows in the last days God said he would pour out his Spirit on all flesh and he knows his time is running up.

Praise Jesus!!

It hadn't occurred to me how "offensive" this form of prayer must be to him. :thumbsup:
