Tilling the soil and planting food plants seems so right, and well...Biblical!

And I can't use gloves. I have to have my bare hands in the soil . it is murder on fingernails. but then, I need to eat and enjoy what I am doing, so it has to be bare handed. he

isn't it a wonder what our God has done for us, even if it is tainted by that ole satan? but then, there is EASTER and the ressurection What a blessing . One blessing right after another blessing. Some, place their hopes on a god that just sits there. can't hear , can't think, has never lifted a finger to create. and is just all around ignorant. And people pray to such a thingy whatever it is.

hear! we have the living word Jesus, And our most magnificent GOD. Who can do anything . anything He wants. and has showed us Mercy and Grace. This God of ours lives!!!!

Jordan,are you missouri synod?

I love these best also for the size and ease. The beefsteak we grew but its so large and watery we didnt plant any the last few years.Cocktail size toms are also the richest.

I like to grow the cocktail size tomatoes. They taste great, and are prolific. Then they can be shared with friends, neighbors, and family in abundance. It only takes 3 or 4 plants to supply everyone.

Tomatoes are one of the best foods grown in the garden. When they are allowed to ripen in the sun, there is nothing better. I remember eating tomato sandwiches from fresh picked tomatoes for lunch during the summer. My uncle grew the best tomatoes around. He loved the beefsteak variety. Just one slice is enough for a whole sandwich. Mmm yum, now my mouth is watering. :yum:

Mmmm...... Greenthumb, you've made me hungry for a big ol' garden 'mater! ;)

I grw mainly moneymaker and beefsteak tomatoe for my mum who either eats them or makes tomato sauce out of them. The past few years they have been getting attacked by huge catipillars which arent even affected by derris dust. They eat the fruit and the leaves of the tomato plant aswell as other vegetables such as zhuchini, broccoli, dwarf beans and capsicum.

My kids like to eat them right off the vine. They bite right into them like an apple.

I'm curious, do you all grow from seeds, or do you buy starts?

I certainly have grown my own plants from seeds. I used to grow them into plants in my big bay windows but got hardwood floors and my son said spilling water would ruin the floors so that is forbidden.
Growing plants from seed really saves money.

When I was a kid we grew a cultivar named "Floridel", it was one of the best-tasting tomatoes I've ever had. Anyone know if it's still available?
Check (do a Google search) with an organization called "Seed Savers' Exchange". If they're still around, they'll probably have it.

I used to belong to it until about 12 yrs ago. I traded lots of "heirloom" veg. seeds samples through the mail with other members.

(I have tended in the past to have problems with blossom end rot and green worms~ but haven't in several years. Funny, I don't know how they "decide" to infest one season and not the next.)

When I used to belong to "Seedsavers Exchange", about 12-14 years ago, and traded "heirloom tomato" (and other vegetable) seeds through the mail, I grew out around 35 different tomato varieties each spring-summer. At that time there was an organic powder called "B.T." (stood for "bactillium thuriengiensis", or some other such Latin words) available at local nurseries. It was (supposedly) safe to use, even if you ate tomatoes with it 24 hrs after spraying with it, and it did kill the hornworms after a few days. It's probably still available. Any nurseryman worth his salt will know what BT is.

Now that I only grow a couple of tomato plants, I just pick them off by hand. They're usually easiest to see just before dusk, while it's still light out, but when there's no bright sun. Look for their small, tell-tale black droppings, on top of leaves. They will be nearby, on the underside of leaves or stems. Those small white butterflies you see flitting around your garden are the culprits that lay the eggs that later metamorphose into these hungry hornworms, so catch or chase those butterflies away whenever possible.

Over-watering can also cause "blossom-end rot" as well as calcium deficiency. It's usually best to occasionally water tomatoes slowly and deeply rather than every day. Because of our summer heat here in Ca., I often would put 60% shade-cloth over our plants in June-Aug. to keep them from scorching!

I love tomatoes. They are really good when you fry them. Mmm boy. I know alot of plants, especially roses, enjoy a rotten banana. Just dig a little hole with your hand real close to the plant's roots and drop it in. I love the Beefsteak tomatoes the most, and the Big Boy tomatoes.

:( I never have success in growing tomatoes, I think because there are so many bugs & worms etc in my area. I do go to "U-Pic" farms & pick, & that's fun. I fill up several 5-gal buckets, then have some to give away. I love the green ones fried. The ripe ones I either eat on tomato sandwiches, or cook a pot of them for breakfast, they are great stewed & eaten with toast for breakfast. There's just no wrong way to eat a tomato!:)
