My husband was in his office today and my 22-month-old son and I were in his playroom. I told him to say "I love you daddy" to surprise his dad. He said it quietly so I told him to scream it, which he seemed happy to do. When my husband responded loudly, my son seemed uneasy. Of course my husband couldn't see that and said it again, and it totally scared my son out of his mind.
He kept looking up at a corner in the room and acting frightened, and freaked out whenever my husband or I left the room. Later in the evening he kept looking at that corner even though he was playing or drinking his milk, and whenever we walked away he started crying and hiding his face. Then when we took him into another room he was doing the same thing to something in there.
Do you think he was afraid because my husband said something loud but my son couldn't hear him? Like totally stupid parents we tried to recreate the scene and talk to each other through rooms to show him that it was okay, but that just scared him even more.
I should mention that this is the happiest, least afraid child I have ever seen. He enjoys sleeping in his own crib, and playing by himself but tonight he just would not play.
I am really really worried....
