  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Are Americans that easily led? perhaps they are, while 50% of them still believe that Adam and Eve were real people I think they can be made to believing anything.
It's going to be a long time before a lot of Americans catch up with the rest of the civilised world, at least another generation.
The Internet will be the best thing that's happened to the US for years, it will change America completely.

In the case of the Central Park 5, it appears that they didn't just go there to play checkers.

How do you know?

And calling them "children" is just disgusting...

According to wikipedia:
Salaam and McCray were 15 years old, and Santana 14 years old, at the time of the crime

Those are children in my books. And why would it be "disgusting" to characterize someone 14 or 15 as a child? That makes no sense. Do you know what the word "disgusting" means?

Yeah, calling 14-16 year olds children just because that's what "child" means is disgusting! I hate consistent meanings of words too!

Because when the went to the park, they perpetrated a gang rape.

Calling teenagers "children" is incorrect, even if we do live in a culture that likes to infantalize them. Doing so to paint rapists in a sympathetic light, to make readers identify them with their own children who would never commit rape, is disgusting.

They were convicted based on contradictory recanted confessions that they said were made under duress. Another person, Matias Reyes, later confessed to the crime and denied there being anyone else present. His confession actually lined up with the evidence and was confirmed by DNA tests.

The convictions of the 5 were vacated.

Vacating a conviction means that there was in error in the proceedings which may have been decisive in the outcome of the case. It doesn't mean that the defendant was innocent.

When you also have a confession from the actual guilty party backed up by DNA evidence, then maybe it's time to allow that these five may well be innocent.

... a guilty party. We're talking about a gang rape here. I'll allow that the five weren't the only ones involved...
So what's your evidence they are guilty?

But it is, of course, possible that the defendant was innocent. What does the evidence say?

What's disgusting is calling innocent children "rapists". I suggest you take a long hard look in the mirror.

Before Trump's immigration speech, Giuliani took the stage with a hat reading "Make Mexico Great Again Also"

What other things will Trump do for the nations of the world?

Apparently no nation is great until it's been Trumped up. The trouble is, anyone with half a brain knows Trumped up means fraudulent, or fabricated.

It's not my evidence. It's the State of New York's evidence.

And the guy who confessed to the rape and that confession was backed up by DNA evidence said these 5 weren't there.

Well, that settles it then. I mean, if you can't trust the word of a convicted serial rapist, what can you trust?

If you can't trust a confession that wasn't recanted, why would you trust one that was recanted?
If you can't trust a confession that is consistent with the evidence, why would you trust those that aren't?

And I guess you also can't trust DNA evidence?

It's not Matias Reyes's confession that is in dispute. It's his claim that the five defendants weren't there that is in dispute. As I've said, since we are dealing with a an rape, it's not either/or. Reyes's guilt does not imply the defendants' innocence.

Besides, the juries found the defendants' confessions to be quite consistent with the evidence.

Anyway if this thread is "Today in Trump" why are we talking about a tweet he did more than three years ago?
