to or too

Bah, I'm the last person that should be answering this thread (engineer) but I can share something with you.  If I can replace 'too' with 'also' then I know I'm doing the right thing  Example.

I have a car too

I have a car also

Other times you use 'to', as in:

I need to get a car 

you can't replace this 'to' with 'also' (well you can, but wouldn't make sense)

I need also get a car

But ofcourse someone will post English technical terms for these two words and their uses (which will probably confuse you as it confuses me too ).

MB if you mke a mistake just say it was a typo. or would that be lying ? the man gave you the right answer.

You explained it well.

Basically, "too" means "also," nothing more.... if you're not using "to" to mean also, then use "to."

However, using "to" as "also" is NOT a good English

Substituting "too" with "also" in this statement wouldn't work.

This is how "too" is used according to dictionary.com:

1. In addition; also: He's coming along too.
2. More than enough; excessively: She worries too much.
3. To a regrettable degree: My error was all too apparent.
4. Very; extremely; immensely: He's only too willing to be of service.
5. Informal. Indeed; so: You will too do it!

I got mine in electrical and computer engineering.  Second major in Computer science.  I'm a software/systems engineer, basically work on software and hardware systems. But it sounds like your husband and I are in the same field

It's funny how the people from my country are such nitpickers when it comes to English grammar and syntax when it's not even our mother tongue. We tend to be unforgiving when it comes to grammatical errors, I think even more than Americans. Bad eh?

Oh my goodness. I totally relate. And should we even talk about YOUR and YOU'RE???? There was an ad in a local paper, and they had 5 or 6 towns with arrows saying five or six times "Your only 5 miles away from blah blah business...." (It should have been YOU'RE as in YOU ARE). I called the place up and asked to speak to their advertising person. When I talked to them, they said that the ad had been placed over the phone, so the mistake had to be on the paper's end...Can you imagine?! An advertising/marketing major not knowing when to use the right YOUR/YOU'RE???!!! Yup; I'm totally a nerd. My husband always has me proofread his business letters, because he knows I'm so picky! I always catch his grammar/spelling mistakes!!! Maybe I should be an English major...

hehe.. I'm not THAT picky, but it's terribly funny when big things make mistakes.

I got a letter, because of my 4.0 at the community college , from the Dean of Education or something like that, inviting me to join Sigma Gamma Phi or something like that. Anyways, in one part of the letter, it went like this.

"....Sigma Gamma Phi. As a part of Sigma Gama Phi.."

Mispelled it only a few words away, hehe

heh nice. At work, we have this computer program which the District Manager ("the big guy") wrote - it keeps track of all the money stuff and whatnot in all of the stores for this franchise - so it's a super important program about company sales. Anyways... he misspelled credit cards as "credet." My manager said she would bawl him out for me.

Heh. Caus I is a gud Englush major, I kan rite howiver I want. Il start my sentenses witha "but" an a "and". An Il drop my prepisishons in weerd plases, like with. An Il put, a few commas, just, anywhir, I, pleez.

My conclushion? Hukt on Fonix wurkt fer me!
