This is a thread made by Sagagiga of the Nintendo Insider forums.

180 US$, that was the announced price. "Wow I'm getting an MP3 and Movie player for just 30 US$ more!" ....This will be most people's reason for buying it, they think they're getting a good buy. What most of them do not know is the amount of stuff you'll be needing to fully utilize the PSP's features. Let's list some of them.

MP3 functionality:
High capacity Memory Stick- 32MB is not enough, you'll need at least 128MB to enjoy it.
cost:??
Earphones w/navigation keys and LCD Screen- To make selections easier. You can't keep carrying the PSP around, it's a lot bigger than most MP3 players.
cost:??
Movie Player:
UMD Movies- No announced titles yet, only Sony will be making them. You'll be limited to what Sony releases.
cost:??
High capacity Memory Stick- 128MB is minimum. You'll need a separate one for your movies.
cost:??
Additional batteries- The PSP is not known for its efficiency so you'll need an extra battery.
cost:??
To sum it all up: (these are only my estimates)
PSP Unit ................ 180
2 128MB Memory sticks ... 100
Earphones ............... 25
Battery ................. 25
UMD Movies .............. ??
TOTAL: "A LOT OF MONEY"

Forgot about games, you'll need them too.

Sony is making you spend more of their exclusive products. Portable movie players makes use of the same DVDs you have at home. Most MP3 players are smaller, has more functions...some even has a built in hard drive that stores a lot of music and other media. SD cards are cheaper. Stand alone MP3 and movie players are more efficient. Gaming is my primary reason for buying a handheld gaming device.

cost:
$30-$60 for a high capacity by time it comes out
Earphones w/navigation keys and LCD Screen- To make selections easier. You can't keep carrying the PSP around, it's a lot bigger than most MP3 players.
cost:
Buy the value pack (you get these with it and it is less than $50 more than the standard pack)
Movie Player:
UMD Movies- No announced titles yet, only Sony will be making them. You'll be limited to what Sony releases. Sony owns MGM there will be quite a selection and they will not price it very high
cost:
High capacity Memory Stick- 128MB is minimum. You'll need a separate one for your movies.
cost:By time PSP is out in US 1 gig sticks will cost about 100. Thats enough for 3 full length films or a combination of movies and music...thats more than suffecient
Additional batteries- The PSP is not known for its efficiency so you'll need an extra battery.
cost: Unless you have no life, 5-6 hours of gaming is enough. Or you can keep it plugged in while playing, If you are going to be playing it for more than 5 hours chances are you can have it plugged n for atleast awhile.
To sum it all up: (these are only my estimates)
PSP Unit ................ It will more likely be $150 in the US. We will know Wednesday January 5. Sony is announcing the details at CES
1024mb Memory stick... 100 by time PSP is released in US
Earphones ............... Free with Value pack
Battery .................Comes with PSP

UMD Movies .............. Memory stick...no need for UMD movies

TOTAL: $300 with a 1 gig memory stick and value pack. Less if you dont need a 1 gig stick... Depending on how much you want to spend it could be as low as $160 really, with a memory stick for saves. MP3 and MP4 playback is extra, you dont need that, after all it IS a GAMING system.

We really dont need trolling and fanboyism on Christian forums. You dont need to bash a system here.

Actually, in Japan the base PSP unit (not the value pack) costs 5000 Yen more than the DS, but other than that, I agree with all of your points.

Both the DS and PSP are extremely popular here, so it's hard to say which system is in the lead right now. Nintendo has had a great marketing campaign for the DS in Japan (with the popular singer Hikaru Utada in most of the commercials), and that's gone a long way to boost sales. Recently however, every time I turn on the TV I see a PSP ad, so it seems like Sony is pulling out all the stops. There's definitely room for both systems in the market, but It'll be interesting to see which unit comes out on top.

Well, I was just thinking, all that's left is Microsoft for mobile gaming...I wonder how big it would be, would it fit in ur pocket, i mean the DS and PSP will be big, and we all know they are small compared to the Xbox when talking consoles...hehe, anyway, i don't plan on buying any mobil gaming devices, I'm more of pocket PC type guy...idk why their not very good with gaming except for solitaire, and a few others...i like to spend money on consoles and PCs, not gameboys, but i do think sony is making a mistake with how high their price is, the system isn't really that creative, i mean it's just a Zodiac or one of those recent cell phone gaming systems, remember NOKIA N-GAGE, yeah well i think this what sony is going for minus the cell phone, the nokia was supposed to be awesome, but i think itflubbed, i think sony will do the same, nintendo has a creative an unique system, not something with just pumped up hardware, but it has that too

It will be the same price as Nintendo, if not only about 40 more or so. It is an incredible piece of hardware and I highly doubt it will just flop. We will see just how well it does here in the coming months though.
If I were to buy either it would be the DS, but I am poor so.... I'll not be getting it for a while.

(DISCLAIMER: I have not used the PSP or the DS for any long amount of time)

I tried out the DS in stores, and I can't exactly figure out what they were thinking when they designed it the way they did. If you think console controllers are inaccurate when trying to play a FPS (Metroid Prime: Hunters, for example), you'd be appalled by the DS. It's almost as if the designers thought that a large percentage of the population had a third hand with which to manipulate the touchscreen -- the stylus included is impossible to use without taking your hands off of the other controls, and I doubt the "thumb piece" or whatever they'll eventually unveil will do much to alleviate this problem or increase accuracy.

I've never been a huge fan of portable gaming, but I just don't see how the DS is going to work.

Actually, there are multiple control configurations you can use. some of them don't use the touchscreen at all.

Try playing an FPS with that sort of setup for any amount of time, and you'll see why that won't work if you actually like winning games =;P

In addition, I believe that you still need to use the touchscreen to activate certain things -- the buttons are used in the control schemes you're talking about to take over from the touchscreen when it comes to aim.

Okay, but really what does it take to reach over half an inch and hit "morph ball"?

GBA (old school) reach over for selet and start like nothing.

PS2 people have to abandon the whole set of face buttons to use the second Analog stick, as do gamecube and XBOX players.

It really isn't that big a deal, all it does is give us an infinite amount of buttons, all depending on what we need for the game.

Colabomb: I was *never* able to "just reach over" and hit the morph ball etc. buttons on the first try, and I'd rather not sit there fiddling with the DS while I'm being shot at.

And having "an infinite amount of buttons" is not a good thing. It would be incredibly easy to hit the wrong button if you don't have your attention directly focused on the touchscreen. It should help you, not hinder you.

Meh......I really don't care for most of that other junk. I'm just tired of Mario already :D Plus the PSP has many cool games coming out that appeal more to me then anything the DS can come up with. I still like how both have great features though. Boy is this market competetive. :p

Oh, BTW 1 gig memory stick dropped to 120, will be under $100 by time PSP is out. Its not that much more for a load of space for anything you want. 512 mb cards will be $50 or below. I can get them for $58 shipped right now. Really, it wont be that much by time its out for the memory.

(DISCLAIMER: Not trying to flame. Tell me to edit if this somehow offends anyone.)

It's strange, really. Nintendo tends to make the smallest (though as we see with the DS, that isn't always the case) products that generally have the fewest features - the Gamecube, for example, can't be taken seriously for music playback, online gaming, DVD playing, modding, etc. For some reason, Nintendo fans tend to criticize other products that carry more features than their Nintendo counterparts, saying the system is too large, too heavy, and so forth. I don't mind lifting a few more pounds, and it's more than worth it when you don't have to make the sacrifices Nintendo tends to have you make.

I will admit that the PSP will likely cost more than the DS when it is released, but one must also take into consideration what they would like to do with the unit. If they want to avoid the added cost of an MP3 player, want to do pretty much anything other than gaming, or aren't interested in Nintendo's generally family-centric library, I believe that the PSP is a much better choice.

(Frith, am I actually supporting Sony for once?)

Agree with you there...I'll take all the extra features I can get. And even if you never use the PSP for watching movies and importing music & photos, it's still a great stand-alone game system.

Having said that, I don't think that the DS is a terrible machine. Head-to-head, it doesn't stack up with the PSP, but if a good game (i.e. Fire Emblem) comes out for it, I'd consider getting one.
