The aformentioned subject title is the DOD policy on homosexuality. I just want to see if everyone agrees with it and state your reason why.

Same here. The thing that bothers me so much is that the military hasn't moved much beyond the attitude of the "greatest generation" in dealing with those different than you. It's the only place you can work and be fired for who you have sex with.

It's just such a stupid reason for firing someone. Like in the cases of those translators who got fired because they were gay, at the time when the army was drawing criticism for not having enough translators who spoke Arabic.

I was just talking about that case with a fellow Marine today. Nobody even knew the guy was gay until they found a letter with some naked pictures of his boyfriend in there.

I fail to see how which way you swing effects your ability to kill someone.

What is the problem? Are they affraid gays will hold thier pinky out when they fire thier M16? Are they affraid gays will want to change the cammo colors to pink and lime green?

Personally I think it stems from a bunch of idiots feeling insecure about themselves and being paranoid.

I was watching a guy on Comedy Central a few weeks ago and they had a guy doing stand-up talking about gays in the military.

"Personally, I dont care about gays in the military. I would actually PREFER there be gays in the military. Most guys wont say that, theyre too affraid ittl be THEM stuck in a fox-hole with the guy. If Im stuck in a fox-hole with annother guy covering my ass, I want him to think my ass is pretty cute. Give him a little extra motivation to fight."

Exactly. With the army facing shortages in enrollment numbers, I find it ridiculous that they would turn willing volunteers away because of their sexual orientation. Hang-ups, much?

Soldiers who claim they are not afraid of guns, bombs, capture, torture or death get terrified at thought of serving with homosexuals. Clearly gays and lesbians should not be used as soldiers; they should be used as weapons.

Legally, the military is not authorized to ask an individual if they are gay. However, let the military find out and you'll be gone faster than a drug dealer.

The standards for what can be considered "not asking" or "letting the military find out" are simply too vague to be practical. The policy is useless as written and enforced.

I have to agree with the already stated sentiments here. Your sexual orientation has no bearing on your ability to fight or perform any other military function. It's a pointless and homophobic policy that's only going to stir up more resentment as time passes and other environments care less and less about this.

Other countries allow gays to serve openly without problems. Even the actions of our military seems to counter the argument that gay soldiers hurt morale. It is less likely to discharge someone during war when morale is important than during peacetime when morale is less of an issue.

I think it's a back-handed attempt to satisfy both the military's need to have qualified personnel regardless of sexual orientation and those who are against homosexuals. If the military was really sincere about it, why not ban gays altogether, which would be the Do Ask and Do Tell policy?

Seconded. Also leaving it alone for the sake of this thread continuity. It's a good topic that could stand some discussion.
So, does anyone else agree with the policy or want to strengthen it somehow?

Please provide some support for your claim that 'sexual deviants' are mentally deficient.
