We all know the ten percent rule. I have counseled many Christians over the years regarding a variety of issues, money being one. Our society is so much different than during biblical times. Especially for young couples just getting started. Many will say “We just can’t afford to give ten percent of our income.” In most cases they are telling the truth.
Now I’m going to get some opposition on my opinion. I have given them a formula.
Take your fixed expenses housing, utilities, transportation, and groceries, and deduct that from your net income. The remainder is your disposable cash. Now give ten percent of your disposable cash.
Do not consider cell phones, TV service, or clothing as mandatory fixed expenses. Many will say the cell phone is compulsory, in some cases, it may be.
I have worked with young families that had no disposable cash. Some were going in the hole every month. What I have suggested to them, give some of your time to helping your church in whatever way you can.
