  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This is one of my favorite subjects. Tithing was not originally a law. It predates the Mosiac Laws. If I'm not mistaken, it was first initiated with Abraham (Genesis) and later through the Levites (Leviticus). Tithing isn't commanded in the NT, but once you understand the principles, you would be foolish not to do it.

Malachai 3 is one of the few times that God gives us a chance to prove Him in a such open manner. He highly encourges us to take a swing at Him. It's obvious that He has some very special reason for being so bold.

There is more than one tithe. Many scholars and teachers disagree on whether the 2nd and 3rd tithes are applicable to an individual. Some say that they are an extension of the 1st tithe.

In relation to today's application:

1st tithe: 10% of everything you own. This shows God's ownership in all that you have. This is unconditional, because He owns everything. This is God's outright!! This is a one time thing and is done once you 1st understand the principle and commit to it. Everything you own: houses, cars, boats, land, etc. Figure out the value and calculate 10%.

2nd tithe: after the 1st tithe has been done, from that point on you give a 2nd tithe based upon your paycheck's gross amount or whatever income you obtain. This is the 10% that most Christians are really talking about.

3rd tithe: but this one isn't done like the 2nd. It isn't weekly or monthly; it covers a certain period of time and has to do with charity.

I personally do all three. God has blessed me so much; it is so incredible! Like many of God's promises, you have to claim them before you can obtain them. By claiming them, you are acting in faith on God's word; He takes you seriously.

For those starting out, at least recognize the 1st tithe and build upon that as you grow in faith. I went the whole nine yards right away, but that's me. God knows your heart.

In addition, there are offerings such as Increase and First Fruits.

I'm by no means an expert on this, but this is my understanding as I have been taught and have researched.
