Tithing. What do I really do with my 10%?

Where did it exist before the Law?

Depends what you mean by 'tithing'. There are examples of Abraham and a fews others giving a tenth. No one was commanded to tithe, as we today are not commanded to tithe. Nowadays, it's more like a rule of thumb, I suppose.

Can you expand on that? What's your problem here? The OP appears to be a Christian yet appears to be either unable to get to church or has decided not to go for some reason. Hence my question. If the OP wants to tithe, your local church would be the best place, no?

tithing is a requirement under the law for Jews not for Christians. In terms of giving what the NT church is about is making sure no one is in need and if they are in need to help meet that need as a body of believers together. We are also not meant to be greedy either and a balance within the church community is important so we should not be in a position that we feel we have too much and if so we should give it away to help others and if we have too little than others should come in an help us. This is a community valued system and what the NT supports. There is no set amount for giving and we each are too give how God is leading us but don't look for fireworks in the sky to spell it out... NT living is very pragmatic and if your neighbor is hungry that should be sign enough to help out.

With regards to giving to your local church we all need to be responsible to what the local church's needs are and if we are going to be a part of it than we should financially contribute to it. The church however is not about a building or sunday services it is about the body of believers so whoever you decided to give to make sure the money is dealt with responsibly. Just because we give 10% of our pay to a church doesn't let us off the hook for contributing to the body of Christ... in the end we are responsible to where our money goes and how it is spent and we need to make sure we are careful how that money is going to be used if we give it away.

Yeah, we know. But that doesn't help the OP unless you are suggesting OP shouldn't bother? At the end of the 10% ends up being very practical and not a cap.

The OP should dismiss the thought of tithing altogether.

The poor were not required to tithe under the Law, There is no indication in God's Word that He amended the tithe to include the poor.

In Numbers 18, we read that God gave His Holy tithe to the Levites because they had no inheritance. He stated that they would have no inheritance for ever throughout their generations. Since there are still Levites on the Earth today, any tithe belongs to the Levites... not to Gentile pastors.
