  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Recently, I was having a discussion about tithing.

When you tithe, can you expect a blessing in return? I'm really not sure if I am wording this correctly... But I could use some insight on this, because I'm not sure if I understand it correctly.
I have always believed that when you tithe, God promises to return it to you. Someone please clarify!

This is the teaching of some preachers of the prosperity heresy but this is not Biblical. If you really look at the OT tithe it added up to about 30% and was used to fund the government and so forth. NT Christians are nowhere commanded to tithe. We recognize that all that we have comes from God and are to joyfully use our money to support the Gospel and the poor. To give in order to make a deal with God is contrary to the spirit with which we are to give. If we attempt to deal with God in a transactional manner we show that we don't know who God is or how bad our sins really are.

Being invited to participate in God's redemptive plan is a blessing. So yes, sort of, but it may not look like what some would have one expect.

In 2 Cor 8 Paul tells us to give according to our means... And the previous comment is correct there really is no backing for a 10% tithe in the NT. However, I do believe we are called to give, only done out of joy and not duty. Also, we are blessed accordingly... Keep reading Paul's words, he says: we will reap what we sow basically.... It's an interesting concept compared the typical money hungry pastor we see on TV now-a-days.
