  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

welcome back to dance class!
go back and take your time, move according to what your body will allow you to do. if the teacher is good, they will tell you that. don't judge yourself for what you used to able to do, do what you can and the rest will come.

Hi Wildlily, I think it's great that you want to get back into ballet! I don't know how much experience you had before so forgive me if this is a little basic.

It's a good idea to stretch some key areas:

1) Rotators: these are the muscles in your hips that initiate turnout. The pigeon pose in yoga is a good stretch for your rotators, and if you Google search "piriformis stretch" you will find pictures of another good stretch. I can't post links to pictures because my post count isn't high enough yet.

2) Hipflexors: these are the muscles that allow you to raise your leg to the back, as in arabesque and attitude. The runner stretch is a good hipflexor stretch, and so is the pigeon pose again.

3) Calves: in the words of master teacher Agrippina Vaganova, plié is the lifeblood of ballet. I think the best way to stretch your calves is simply to stand with the balls of your feet on a stair step and let your heels hang off the edge, and let gravity stretch your heels downward.

4) Hamstrings and adductors: I am grouping these together because these aren't essential for executing steps so much as for getting your leg higher to the front or side.

Stretch is only half the equation. The other half is strength, and you will probably be sore in your arms, legs, and back for a while after you start ballet. Pilates is a good conditioning program to use in conjunction with dance because it was developed for dancers. It can strengthen many of the muscle groups you will be using in ballet class, especially your abs. You can probably find some instructional videos at your local library.

Finally, whenever you listen to music, count the beats and the phrases so you body gets used to feeling rhythm again. That is a huge part of any form of dance, as I'm sure you know.

The most important thing to do is to have fun! We dance not just for fitness or to look a certain way but because deep down it feels good to move and to express ourselves to music. Enjoy your classes!
