  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

My boyfriend just left for basic training, I've been begged not to do ANYTHING to the outside of the envelope when I write but is there anything else I should/ shouldnt do? I know the general rules of what can and cant be sent but are there any other things I can do to make things easier on him?
Thanks! :)

What branch?

Don't put anything but what you normally would on an envelope. His name, address, and the same for yours. If you put anything inside the envelope besides paper, or if it's a thick card, don't put anything like "Oh I love you" etc etc if it's something the TI will open up and read.

I had to read a friends letter aloud in basic because it had stuff on the outside of it, it was funny but he didn't find it so funny. They won't READ your letters if nothing is outstanding in it, but it won't get him in trouble, they'll just maybe embarass him or make him push depending on what it is.

My favorite example of dodging a funny letter was a friend of mine in my unit who, when in basic, got a letter from his little sister with crawl all on the outside of it and "I love you clayton" scribbled on it all messily. The TI asked what it was and he said "Sir, my girlfriend has multiple schlerosis." and the TI just shut his mouth and didn't say anything. Then on the last day of training and a few letters later, his TI asked him if that was true and he just said "Hell no, that's my little sister sir!"

yeah i wouldn't recommend writing on any of the envelopes. as a rule of thumb, anything that makes him stand out (including I LOVE YOUUUUU!! on the envelopes) is a bad thing.

in the letters tell him you're proud of him and that he's doing a great job. tell him about stuff that happened to you (no matter how mundane) and send a couple pics so he can remember what home is like. when my bro was in army bct (i was 15 then) i used to send him explosm comics (him and his battle buddy liked those lol) and tell him about my cat's newest adventures and whatnot. letters are like gold in basic so keep 'em coming. =]

The simple things are veeeery interesting in basic heh.. Just ramble on about the smallest things, just make the letter long and about alot of different topics.

... Don't forget sports scores. If your boyfriend has all the scores from the latest football games etc, he will immediately be a hero to his unit.

haha hes already asked for scores and given me a list of teams him and few others guys really wanted to know about. I told him fine, but I'm sending each score in a different envelope so he has to push for each one :D He didnt find it nearly as funny as I did :D
I kept telling him I was gonna run out of stuff to write about, all he did was remind me how good I am at rambling on and on :) Thanks for the tips :)
