Tips for knowing God more intimately?

I agree with Old Lady, spending time in prayer, talking to God about everything that is on your mind, just like you would do to a very good friend, and reading the Bible are the ways to know God more intimately.

How do you get to know anyone? Spend time with them.

So make use of the enormous range of online audio material like:-
Dr Martin Lloyd-Jones surmons and listen to his expository preaching.
Pray intelligently for the missionaries your church supports, ditto for those you know are sick and for situations in the world.
Be involved with your church.
Get biblical commentaries and read them along with the Bible passages they are commenting on.

Talk to nonchristian about Jesus. Nothing drives one to him and to the Bible faster than having one's backside kicked by a knowledgeable atheists.

How do you become better acquainted with someone you've met? Do you map out a plan or spend time together and allow the connection to develop naturally? You don't have to strive to know God. You may focus on prayer one day, share your thoughts and concerns another, read the bible the next, listen to worship music the day after, do something creative, or express your gratitude for His presence. There's no formula for togetherness. The bond deepens with time and consistency. The same holds true with Him.

I think a great way to know God is by loving other people.

"Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God." - 1 John 4:7

Get involved in a church or something with people who believes God does stuff to people today, and in being filled with the Holy spirit.

I would suggest learning more about God's qualities and characteristics. The more you learn about His nature, the more you'll fall in love with Him. Spending time with Him i.e. seeking Him in prayer and His word also is a great way to know the Lord more intimately.

We know that God is:

• Unchanging in His nature. His character is set in perfection.
  
• Always faithful to carry out His will in His perfect timing.
• A protector to those in trouble.
• The God of the universe rejoices over us with singing.
• Willing to give us above and beyond anything we ask, and expects us to shower Him with requests. He is more than capable of meeting all of them for His glory, and to maximize our joy.
• A rock of integrity.
• A love so passionate that He willing drank the cup of the wrath of God and suffered an infinite fall in our place, so that we could spend eternity with Him in His presence. He would rather die than live without us.
  
• Three persons in one, the Godhead.
  
• A righteous judge who renders perfect justice.
• A fierce warrior - the Lion of the tribe of Judah.
• A source of contentedness even in the most miserable of deserts.
  
• Ultimate authority over all creation, even over evil spirits and false gods. Every knee, including the devils will bow before Him one way or another.
• A rewarder for those who diligently seek Him.
• A love so strong is endures forever.
• etc.

The "Hours" as they are called (each one does not take an hour they are just done at the beginning of certain hours) are the universal historical Christian and Israelite practice. You see the Apostles doing it in Acts for instance, going up to the Temple at certain times for prayers. By doing it you will memorize Scripture, learn it's meaning, and draw closer to God while sanctifying each day of your life. You can read more about it here (along with the times of the prayers). I'd recommend (since you are a Western Christian) this order for praying the Psalms listed here.

Here also is an ancient Christian letter on the value of praying the Psalms and the effect they'll have on the soul, praying prayers inspired by the Holy Spirit in the Holy Spirit through Christ to God.

Meditate on the Scriptures. Chew on His words, if you will. Spend time reading the Bible. Question it. Study it in its original context. Reflect on the implications of the passages and how it affects the way you see the world and act in it.

There is a difference between meditating and simply memorizing or studying the passages, just as keeping and piling up delicacies in the fridge is different from actually eating and enjoying them. After all, the Psalmist did say, "Taste and see that the LORD is good." (Psalm 34:8)

My youth group have been discussing about this very issue for the past few weeks, some of which I've summarized here. While the discussion covers a lot more than what is posted there, that was what I thought was the most important point, i.e. the discipline of cultivating the relationship.

Building an intimate relationship with someone (anyone) requires us to maintain a consistent and rich communication, both in speaking (through prayer) and in listening to Him (through meditation). What I liked about the lesson was that it gives a good structure to build that foundation, but still allows for a lot of flexibility to let it build naturally.
