If you clip your pets nails and they bleed, just put a little flour on them and it'll stop the bleeding. I also suggest getting a nail clipper set from a local pet store instead of using fingernail clippers, since nail clippers for animals are shaped like the animals nail and are a lot safer for your pet.

We use a bar of soap. It doesn't seem to hurt them at all (just press the nail into the soap) and it keeps it from getting infected.

Pet clippers are a must!!!

Anyone know how to trim bassett nails? I'm about ready to take her to the vet and have him do it because they are so think they split. I can't even get the itty bitty tip clipped.

I hate clipping my dog's nails. I can never tell where the quick is. I've cut him several times by overdoing it. The last time it was very difficult to get the bleeding stopped.

I do use pet clippers. Is there any technique to help me do this right?

I'd make sure you just take a tiny bit off. If the nail is too long then take a tiny bit off and wait a week before clipping again. The quick will recede each time you clip and over a few weeks you'll be able to get it down to the right length.

By tiny I mean use the guard that comes on the clippers to make sure too much nail does not go through the hole, then only do it ONCE even it you think you can do it again, DON'T.
