It is possible. Virtually every culture has some reference to dragons. The fire that supposedly came from the mouth could have been methane igniting because of static electricity, not from inside the creature.

Why is a good question. Stories often reset their timeline.

I'll be interested to see what they say the day after it's supposed to happen. Given that it's based on good old numerology and apophenia (illusory correlation), it's hard to see how they can say they got the date wrong... but they probably will. Alternatively, they could say that they stopped it by making the world aware it was coming... Lol!
