• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I think Albert Einstein said that time is a physical part of the universe; but I could be wrong on that.

Here's a much better explanation of the same thing and happens to be copy and pasted from my Facebook page. September 14

What is time?

This is actually the simplest thing in the universe to answer... and you can forget what Isac Newton believed about time because he was wrong!

Time is another word for measuring distance... like inch, foot, yard, mile etc.. A year is the distance the Earth travels in a single rotation around the sun. A month is 1/12th that distance lol. A day is a single rotation of the Earth on it's axis, and if it does this approximately 365 times it'll travel one year.

See, "time" is not some mystical force or container for events. You can't see into the future or the past nor can you travel to either. That's why Einstein said that Time is relative. Because it is! Unlike a foot or a mile time is not a universal form of measurement. A year on Mars isn't a year on Earth. Time is relative to your position on the planet you currently inhabit!

Well, actually there is scientific evidence of a concept which we label time.

Scientists put an atomic clock and placed it on a satellite orbiting around the Earth. It happened after a while, the atomic clock in the satellite was actually ahead of the atomic clock on the ground, which means that time travels somewhat faster when orbiting around the earth.

I don't know the specifics but it is described by Einstein's law of special relativity, specifically space-time, where space and time are dependent on one another in some way.

This phenomenon is observed all the time, and in fact satellites such as your GPS need to have their clocks offset so that they stay in sync with the slower Earth bound clocks.

The consequences of this is that theoretically we can travel forward in time. So time travel, forward at least, seems to be possible.

I've been time traveling into the future all my life. At a rate of one second per second.

Have we done the same with a clock traveling in the opposite direction and find that it was going slower? If we do the same around Mars do we get the same results? What about the moon... or perhaps the sun?

Idk, but I'm inclined to think gravity was a factor on the watch rather than time. *Shrugs*

Well it's the idea of space-time, that time is actually a dimension. Time can be influenced by space, and since gravity is described by the curvature in space, gravity is sort of a factor.

Yeah, but that's what I'm saying... I think it was a factor on the watch... not on time. Maybe I'm just not versed in it but I still haven't seen anything to suggest otherwise. Now I would like to think of myself as a fairly reasonable person. That said I'd be willing to consider changing my mind if further evidence were presented but as it stands I don't believe in time as anything more than another word for physical distance.

Well that is what time is. It's a dimension.

The way I like to think about it(which is most likely not scientifically true) is that imagine say two atoms with an electron which bounces between them. As you travel faster, they have to bounce faster between each other to keep up. Therefore, there would be more "pulses" between the atom at greater speeds. Although this is a physical phenomenon, we associate it to time; the sequence and longevity of cause/effect reactions. Just to repeat, this is not scientifically accurate, but I believe that what happens is similar to what I described.

In this way, time is merely caused by physical, spatial processes. However, that's what we call time, so even if time is this physical thing, it is still time and it is still how we interpret time.

The watch orbiting around the Earth is still ticking faster relative to the watch on Earth, in the same way that astronauts on board a space shuttle will age faster than people on Earth relative to the people on Earth. So whether what we label time is a physical phenomenon or not, it is still time.

But if you orbit very close to the surface of a black hole, time will stop for you relative to the rest of space. Due to your velocity, time will stop for you and you will have traveled in time because of your speed.

That would be time-travel.

If faster than light travel were to happen, time would scroll backwards during your trip.

This might be possible for things like thoughts. But things with any mass seem to be limited to light speed.

Yes, I do.

I see the change in location of the hands. Time is simply a way of conceptualizing change. I see the change, and therefore time.
