  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Me too. I usually like Tim Burton. :)
He does some really creative things. I love that type of thing so I think the movie for the visuals alone would be something I would enjoy. And Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter? You know he's gonna kill it! :D

oh, i'm dissapointed... i just watched the trailler and read a bit about the movie. because i didn't picture wonderland to be so dark.

here's what imdb say about the plot:

19-year-old Alice returns to the magical world from her childhood adventure, where she reunites with her old friends and learns of her true destiny: to end the Red Queen's reign of terror.

so it's not the original story, it's someone's imagination of a sequel. *shrug*

Tim Burton is always dark & Gothic. Thats why I like his take on stories. I'm not expecting an exact telling on it but I am interested in Burton's vision on it.

Remember Edward Scissorhands? When he directed Batman? They all have the fantastical dark look to them that I love to look at.

The movie Passion of the Christ was based on Saint Emmerich's book Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ, which was later edited after her death, and therefore the Church not only ignored it when she studied Emmerich but she even did not approve of the book. So the private revelations within it are unapproved.

the idea that the book was edited after her death is a theory, not a proven fact... the book has not been condemned by the Church so we're allowed to read it

the reason the Church largely ignored the book at Emmerich's beatification is not because it was proven that it as edited, but because some said so, and there was controversy.... this is the impression I got. She was beatified because she lived a holy life :)

A) Didn't Tim Burton do The nightmare before Christmas? Someone correct me if I'm wrong but i think that was condemned.

B) The Passion movie does not go against the gospel or Catholic teaching. It's perfectly in line with both.

The depiction of how Christ suffered, however is based on private revelation and all that means is we are free to believe that's how it went down as long as we understand that it's speculation and not absolute truth, because the depiction does not contradict the gospel accounts at all.

as much as i want to spit on Mel Gibson, he is such a pseudo, phony baloney hypocrite adulator... he only offered it as speculation and never claimed it was anything but.

Yep, he did the Nightmare Before Christmas. I never heard anything about it being condemned. Then again, I was not interested in that one. It was a weird musical thingy I couldn't get into. He did the Corpse Bride also, which I did not get into.

I prefer his movies with actors & set design.

Film Nerd Alert:

Officially, Burton didn't direct The Nightmare Before Christmas. Stop-motion is too time-consuming and he didn't feel like dedicating three years of his life to one movie, so he left the actual directing to Henry Selick, an old friend of his from when he worked as a Disney animator. Because the art direction and story definitely have Burton's signature all over it, which is why the movie is originally called "Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas".

Henry Selick, by the way, often works with stop-motion. He is also the man behind James and the Giant Peach and, more recently, the stunning Coraline (go see that, if you haven't already - it's gorgeous)

I googled for a while, but I couldn't find anything about Nightmare being banned. It's fairly harmless.

Michie - I hate to burst your bubble, but most US and EU cinemas are banning Alice in Wonderland because of a conflict with Disney. Disney wants to release the DVD after only three months of cinema play, whereas the official deal is four months. Both parties are refusing to back down.

Yeah, but if you're anything like me you're gonna be really impatient about it. :D

Have you seen Sleepy Hollow? I quite like that one. Stunning cinematography.
Yes I have. I agree. I love the visuals.

I can wait but I find it irritating to say the least. But I'm an old movie fanatic too so I'm always digging something up if I'm in the mood to watch a movie.

Was looking foward to Alice though. Stupid Disney.

I love the Alice books as well, Michie! And, while I can't stand Burton's retakes on Planet of the Apes and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory I want to see what he will do with Alice. I think he made a wise move to take the characters and world and write a new story. I loved his Batman movies so I know he can do good things.

I just wish it wasn't in 3-d. 3-d sometimes give me headaches, but I'll feel like I might miss something if I don't see it in 3-d.

I'm not a fan of everything Burton has done but his artistic visions are stunning.

The 3-D aspect, I find that never to be as enhancing as they hype it up to be so I usually pass on it. I've heard a lot of people complain of headaches with 3-D.

I didn't like Planet of the Apes either.

Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, I've never liked that story. I think it's kind of creepy. I didn't like the first movie made from that story either.

I didn't like reading Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, and I don't like Tim Burton's movies, so I will probably pass. :p
