Thousands of US child migrants sexually abused

The US health department has received more than 4,500 complaints of sexual abuse against detained migrant children from 2014-2018, documents show.

The Department of Justice reportedly received an additional 1,303 sex abuse complaints against unaccompanied minors during the same period.

Congressman Ted Deutch, who released the figures, said at least 154 claims are against facility staff members.

It was an early morning in May when Maria was released from the T. Don Hutto Residential Detention Center in Texas. She had been granted bond and was permitted to stay with her brother in Washington D.C. while her asylum case was pending.

After gathering her belongings, she was escorted to a loading area fenced with razor wire and placed into a cage inside a van. The driver was a male guard named Donald Dunn. Shortly after leaving Hutto, Dunn pulled off the road.

The reality is most staff are not committing crimes, however, there is also not enough being done to stop abuse by other inmates. Because these people are treated as disposable, such abuse continues unabated.

You will always have people detained for whatever reason, "border security" does not address systemic issues that allow sexual abuse to occur unabated.

The problem isn't the population wanting border security. The issue is that there has been an incentive to crossing the US border. If we secure the border and take away the incentive there would be no trek to the US hence parents would not put their children in jeopardy. Also the blame falls on the lack of economic development and opportunity in the countries people are leaving. Cant blame the USA for it.

Border security is irrelevant to people abused in custody. Bringing it up is a distraction from the issue.
