Who are the running contenders and will the church be returned to it's traditionally conservative approach or continue to go down the road of liberalism?

What are the main concerns and issues facing the Roman Catholic Church?

Cardinal Jean-Marc Aveline

Currently the lone residential cardinal-archbishop in mainland France, Cardinal Jean-Marc Aveline, 66, was reportedly very close to Pope Francis. While Francis has made it a priority to visit smaller, marginalized European countries during his pontificate, Cardinal Aveline was instrumental in securing a papal trip to his Marseille see city in 2023. An impressive scholar and academic, Cardinal Aveline has degrees from two of Paris’ most prestigious universities,

Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo Besungu

Statistics show that the growth and future of Catholicism resides in Africa. And, if the cardinal-electors are looking for a papal candidate who embodies the gifts of African Catholicism, Capuchin Franciscan Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo Besungu, 65, is a likely choice. Appointed archbishop of Democratic Republic of Congo’s archdiocese of Kinshasa in 2018, Cardinal Ambongo Besungu has served on the papal advisory Council of Cardinals since 2020

Cardinal Anders Arborelius

Since his elevation, Swedish Cardinal Anders Arborelius, 75, a Carmelite, has often been lauded for his level-headedness and is liked by both conservatives and progressives in his country.

Some (including myself) believe the next pope will be Cardinal Peter Turkson based on the cardinal's involvement in the World Economic Forum (WEF) and a few other factors that are in his favor.

Cardinal Turkson has been actively involved in the World Economic Forum (WEF) meetings in Davos, representing the Vatican’s interests and perspectives on global economic issues. His participation has focused on promoting a vision of economic development that aligns with the principles of social justice and the common good.

I'm hoping for a more traditional successor to Pope Francis, if only for the spiritual health of the Catholic laity.
I heard there are about 135 Cardinals than can vote on this and 105 were appointed by Pope Francis.

Is that right?

If true - how likely is it that they will go in a 180 degree opposite side of the spectrum from Francis?

Just curious

It's some high percentage, I haven't followed the process closely enough to know the exact number. I've heard two plausible theories on how a more traditional pope could be elected by Francis cardinals: first, that the cardinals are tired of the endless PR nightmare that was the Francis pontificate, so they'll choose someone more low profile; second, that the liberal cardinals will be so focused on diversity that they'll vote for an African pope despite the fact that he would be a traditionalist.

I don't think either of these routes results in a complete 180 from Francis, but either would be a step in the right direction.

That would be for me reason to pray for him not to be present given the disastrous ideas promulgated from Davos.

Well if they do elect an extreme liberal the upshot is we can expect to receive more converts into the Orthodox Church and we will need more Western Rite parishes.

But on the other hand the cardinals appointed by Pope Benedict, memory eternal appointed Pope Francis, and those appointed by Paul VI put in the blessed Pope John Paul II.

Hopefully regardless of who becomes Pope, they will prioritize the beatification of Pope Benedict XVI who has been subject to terrible vilification in the media due to his traditionalism.

I think it will be Pietro Parolin, although Michie posted an item to say he'd had a bit of a health scare.

Just my personal opinion of course. He does have a lot of experience in Vatican circles, and has been the Vatican's Secretary of State since 2013 so he'd be familiar with heads of state as well as those higher up in church circles, both Catholic and non-Catholic.

I don't think the late Pope Francis was even that "liberal." Many of the media twisted his own words to fit their agenda. He was very much a pastoral Pope, a Pope for the people. Many of his documents have been misinterpreted.

But yes, I prefer a traditional, conservative approach, coming from a practicing Catholic.

What does the prophecy of St. Malachy say ?

Is it to be believed ?
I don't think it will matter. If the next Popes name is Peter , Malachy's prophecy will go viral , and the internet will be abuzz with end of the world scenarios.

I remember Nostradamas prophecy of 1999 and the yr 2000 and the Y2K bug was comming up , and oh boy the media was having a hay day with Nostradamas.

I doubt it will be Peter, but that would freak some people out, indeed.
