Most Christians are unaware of the controversies that take place in theology or biblical studies, but they are not unaffected. Bad teaching has a way of filtering down and corrupting the unsuspecting innocent. That is why pastors and other leaders are called to contend for the faith (Jude 6).
A present fad in biblical studies is called The New Perspective on Paul (NPP). Although this originated in the openly liberal quarters, many important features are now being embraced by evangelicals. The influence of the British evangelical scholar N.T. Wright has been very powerful in this regard, and it is his version of the New Perspective that we will consider. According to Wright, Pauls letters are not at all concerned with refuting salvation by works, and therefore Pauls teaching of justification has been completely misunderstood by evangelicals (and everyone else).
