Traditional - contemporary - rock - jazz

Opinions?
Gregorian or polyphonic chant. Simple participatory psalmody. That's my go-to. Anybody can do it. Reverent, beautiful. AND probably very similar to what Israelite worship would have sounded like.

I like Palestrina, Handel, Bach, Mozart, Tallis, and the like. Mix in a bit of well chosen contemporary and I'm good to go. But here is my favorite, and only composed in 1982:

I actually love jazz but I can't see it for worship. Dave Brubeck thought otherwise.

I believe that God is far more interested in the heart and much less interested in the medium. Go with what fits you as an individual.

Thought about how we sound as some of the 6500 languages sing to Him such as:
"But I will sing of your strength; I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning. For you have been to me a fortress and a refuge in the day of my distress." Psa 59

My favorites.
- Enduring/Classic Hymns.
- Contemporary Music/Praise & Worship Songs.
*Integrity Music & Maranatha Music.
---
Interesting to note:
Revival/Renewal movements..often brought new style/type of songs.
--
Examples
'The Methodist Revival/Movement'
- Some of songs were listed in the Hymnal..later.
---
'The Jesus Movement'
- The beginning of Contemporary Music/songs..

My husband had a vision of this in heaven once ...
and he told me it was beautiful ...

Think God likes variety. After all, look at all of us.

"Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us? why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, by profaning the covenant of our fathers?” Mal 2;10
"For You formed my innermost parts; You knit me [together] in my mother’s womb” Psa 139:13
"The spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life.” Job 33:4
"I will put ligaments on you, place muscles on you, and cover you with skin. I will put breath in you, and you will live. Then you will know that I am Yahweh." Eze 37:6

We can all praise and worship our one Father.

How about..the 'silence' during the worship?
---
I was at the meeting..years ago.
- During the praise & worship time..some people started..kneeling, prostrating..
- including worship leaders..the music stopped.
- It (silence) lasted..4-5 minutes.
---
"It is a great lesson to learn that to be silent before God is the secret of true adoration."

My pastor from before I moved was big on silences. And people sometimes squirmed a bit at long silences. I miss those long moments now.

The GIRM (General Instructions on the Roman Missal - the rules for Catholic liturgy in the Roman Rite) allow for silence in several places during the mass. Culturally we are programmed to fill every second with noise of some sort. So these periods of allowed and encouraged silence are seldom used. But worship from a long time ago made use of silence and it is a live option even today.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I have gone on many silent retreats and the silence does a sort of mental reset on me every time. We have too much noise we surround ourselves with.
