  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

You kill bacteria just living. You kill plants and animals to eat. Generic killing's nothing. Murder is what's wrong.

Do you have a bible that say Thou Shalt Not Murder? I understand the translation from Hebrew, I have many friends whos primary language is Hebrew, but I've never seen an English Bible that says murder.

If it weren't, God ordered the ancient Hebrews to sin frequently, such as when David killed Goliath.

And whenever we eat.

The Message translation, as well as the Literal Translation, the Jewish Publication Society Translation, Contemporary English Version, English Standard Version, Good News Bible, God's Word translation, the Holman Christian Standard Bible, Hebrew Names Version, the World English Bible, and Young's Literal Translation all say murder.

The Basic Bible in English says "Do not put anyone to death without cause."

Actually, we should be referring to the New Testament if we want to ask questions like this, like when Jesus told us to love our enemies. I fail to see how I can love my enemy by killing him. Maybe they believe loving your neighbor takes precedence, I don't know.
I don't try to validate the war in Iraq by what someone said God told him. I don't use the Old Testament to justify things I believe the coming of Jesus changed. I believe the war in Iraq is more of a government thing and Christians should probably pray for it to be over soon.
I guess it all boils down to what you believe--I'm not so sure I shouldn't defend myself if someone attacks me but some believe that is what Jesus wants them to do.
In that instance, I wouldn't be against someone defending him/herself against an attacker, because I don't know how one would serve God's purposes if he/she were dead.

I agree, and I'm not aware of any church that has adopted a bible with "death without cause" or "murder" in it.

You would agree the Bible is not literal? At least in English.

That's right 14Joe888, they just get a new version of the bible written that conforms to their prejudices and what they would have done anyway, and then they can say God sanctions their actions - that way you can kill who you want, pick and choose which of Jesus's lessons to follow and generally fit the religion around you rather than anything as onerous as the other way round - Do you see how certain people get Christianity to work for them now, 14Joe888?

It's actually Thou Shalt not murder, if you look at the Hebrew root...it's murder in that instance, not just killing.

My Revised Standard Version: You shall not kill.

My New American Standard: You shall not murder.

Even NOT being under the Law, I understand that God's instruction to the ancient Hebrews was not to murder someone, or in other words, not to kill someone without cause.

Thanks, it's rather obvious, after reading the rest of the Bible, the intention is murder, not kill.

Not touching the question about the bible being literal? Chickens!:D

All of it?

The most widely accepted bibles say kill, have those churches accepted the wrong bible? Serioulsy, it says Thou Shalt Not Kill, if it's to be taken literally, there are no two ways about that line.

I didn't realize that "literal" meant to ignore context.

Well, as it's a literary work, so it's literal. Just like A Tale of Two Cities. But should we just take it at face value and not think about it? Should we ignore any esoteric and philosophical truths by not looking any further than a single value for the translated word of the translated word of the translated word? I think not. Turns people into pharisees.

Maybe it's just a problem living in the Bible Belt, but most people that have told me to take the Bible literally got mad whenever I took something in context.

There is no context in the simple sentence "Thou Shalt Not Kill"

That is what the word means though.
