During this mornings sermon (I attend a non calvinist Baptist Church) the pastor preaching mentioned, more then one time, that he knew of people that have said to him, 'I want to believe, I just can't believe the Gospel.'

The Bible drips with the doctrines of Grace but for some reason, even the saved have a hard time seeing them...why do you believe this is? We can say that the unsaved don't believe because they're not called, but what about the saved that don't believe in the doctrines of Grace? And what can we do, within the bounds of Scripture, about it?

Far too many people who have been redeemed do not read the Bible and take for gospel whatever their minister tells them. We can, and must, point them to the multitude of passages that declare God's Grace, but only the Holy Spirit is able to open their eyes and minds to believe it.

What follows is just this Calvinists opinion.

IMO those that say they "want to believe" and can not are saying they can not accept the gospel as presented. They are looking for a god of their own choosing, one that fits their desire for what a god should be or demand.

The first time men broke a covenant with God the cause was that man wanted to be his own God.
How many people today believe that if they are "good enough" they will get to heaven? If they obey all the commandment or do good works or keep church law they will go to heaven.

Their eternity is within their control. The are saved because they deserve it. They get to be their own lord and savior.

Some things never change.

Do you then mean that if a saved person does not believe in the doctrines of grace as you do, that they haven't read the Bible, or studied it? So if I don't believe in calvin's teachings of grace I obviously haven't read the Bible, nor has my minister, and we require the Holy Spirit to open our eyes to the teaching of Calvin?

Just trying to understand....

'I want to believe, I just can't believe the Gospel.' In reference to this, I would venture to say that these people may not be saved at all. Christ told us that there will be some who believe they are saved, but He will say to them, "Be gone from Me, I never knew you." There are many people who are attracted to the fellowship of church, or who may have prayed the sinners prayer out of fear for their own hides. These people may stay in church and minister to others all their lives without a clear understanding of what they are doing due to the fact that the scriptures are foolishness to the unbeliever.

Ok, fair enough. I was honestly only trying to understand where he was coming from. I'll leave the post to avoid a debate. Sorry.

Fair enough. Chapter and verse could be quoted and not touch on the area of grace that is in question. Would you tell me how you understand the gift of grace, which would help my attempt to give a relevant reply.

Upon further consideration, you may continue. After all, how will we answer your questions if we don't understand your POV or allow you to ask?
