The existance of a process does not negate the existance of a Designer. My husband programs computers -- now and then he'll be given a tedious grunt work assignment and he'll write a program to do the work for him. But that doesn't mean he isn't responsible and in control of the process. He still has to design all the perimeters which guide the program, and still gets 100% credit for the work.

EXACTLY!

Every so often, when I'm able to get a TINY little program to do something really beautiful... I dunno, I can't really explain it. I feel like God's saying "YES!! JUST LIKE THAT!!!". Only He's *WAY* better at it than I am.

Still, made in His image, are we not?

Ah well, like Seeb's said -- it is not critical to our salvation. Some people like to see a magic trick and be amazed. Knowing the secrets behind the trick might just spoil it for them. OTOH -- Some people want to see how it is done and are impressed by the skill set behind it. A good magician relates well to both sorts of people.

Though, I think we do compromise ourselves by our stubborness. A lack of respect for nature's processes does not help us in our efforts to be good caretakers or our world. Or even very good participants in it. Sigh.

Happy Birthday! :)

Are any of you here real scientists, or just self taught in evolution? Just curious?

I'm not a scientist, exactly, but I did learn basic biology in school, and I learned basic genetics as a kid in a special science program at my school. I knew about genetics when I was 7 or so. I've understood basic evolutionary biology for most of my life, and I learned the basic math of population genetics in college.

So, I don't have a degree, but I have a basic layman's understanding of the field.

I have a degree in anthropology--that's where most of my basic knowledge comes in about evolution. I focused on archaeology, and not biological anthro--so my official book-learning is not very biological.

My husband, otoh, is a PhD candidate who studies evolutionary theory by creating computer/mathematical models to better understand the dynamics of population genetics. So when I have questions, he's more than able to answer them.

Look in my profile. If you doubt it, you can always call me at NYMC. Or you can do a PubMed search under lucas pa. I'm the guy with stem cells. There's another PA Lucas but a microbiologist.
Cool, a real live professor lol :)  I have no reason to doubt you.

I am a physics major. My experience with evolution is mainly self taught, but I have taken a course in science and theology that spent a significant amount of time on evolution as well as a seminar on genetics.
