  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This Thread Will End All Debate On The Sabbath Once And For All

It's as easy for a man to take the Gospel of Thomas and call it gnostic (which i realise it has been referred to long before today) as it is for a man to put a wool sweater on a wolf and call it a sheep, the same purpose is served and nobody comes out any better.

I have in my position an all-in-one-volume collection of the Gnostic Scriptures. Thomas is in it.

It is Gnostic.

I stumbled across the gospel of Thomas earlier today in what I believe to be divine intervention.. as I have been begreived over people arguing about the Sabbath lately.. The Gospel of Thomas is respected as having divine authorship however was not included into the NT cannon because they chose to only include 4 versions.. The gospel of Thomas if you are not familiar is a collection of Jesus's sayings.. this being the one that can finally put an end to this discussion once and for all.

27 "If you do not fast from the world, you will not find the (Father's) domain. If you do not observe the sabbath as a sabbath you will not see the Father."
This "gospel" message contains a number of contradictions to Scripture, that would prohibit it from inclusion to canon. But turning a blind eye to the problems that it has, there is another approach you can use to determine if your selected quote carries any weight.

Return to your quote's source, and determine when the statement concerning the sabbath was given.
Was this statement made before or after the death of the Testator, Who inaugurated the new covenant with His death?
In other words, was this statement made to the children of Israel during the tenure of the Mosaic covenant, or does the statement carry any impact to the church in the new covenant era?

Answering this question honestly will reveal that this suspect quote does not support the sabbath today.

Well, when it is a gnostic work, then there's no real other choice. Sometimes a spade is a spade, or something like that. I think after your Origins Theology fiasco(es), you may want to take a step back and really research what you use for sources...

I remember reading a book by E.B. White many years ago ( I picked up two huge hardcovers at a garage sale) and she was talking about how the Albigensian were persecuted and how they were the forerunners of the Protestants and the SDA Church. Maybe they do have an affinity for gnosticism? What I thought was really strange though was the SDA are in many ways Judaizers whereas the Cathar/albegensians considered the God of the Old Testament to be the evil demiurge!

I also found a poll thread on the Gospel of Thomas but I will let someone else "resurrect" it

How much of the Gospel of Thomas is accurate?

I found some quotes from the book on this web page:

"The gospel had been planted in Bohemia as early as the ninth century. The Bible was translated, and public worship was conducted, in the language of the people. ... Heaven had provided other agencies for the preservation of the church. Many of the Waldenses and Albigenses, driven by persecution from their homes in France and Italy, came to Bohemia. Though they dared not teach openly, they labored zealously in secret. Thus the true faith was preserved from century to century ."
-- Ellen White, Great Controversy, Chapter 6, paragraph 1, p97.

"Century after century the blood of the saints had been shed. While the Waldenses laid down their lives upon the mountains of Piedmont "for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ," similar witness to the truth had been borne by their brethren, the Albigenses of France."
-- Ellen White, Great Controversy, Ch 15, p271.

This one isn't funny if you take the time to think about its meaning. What are women known for? Jealousy, deceit, hating other women... What are men known for? Trying to find the good in things, bringing peace.. trying to be honorable.. it is clear this is what he meant.. he wasn't promoting hermaphradites or any other ridiculousness

Do not get married. Ever.

Ok so i need to look in my bible and find out if the suspect quote lines up with the bible and post dates the New Covenant (which is the removal of punishment of death imediately for sins.. as well as the removal of blood sacrafice)

If it lines up with the Bible, why didn't you quote from the Bible?

I take it you're now going to allow people to tender other evidence not from the Bible?

So your sure it wasn't inspired? because you were there when it was written? wait a second that makes you what like 2000 years old? wow and you can still type? pretty astonishing, I would of assumed your fingers would have decayed and fell off by now..

Ok, I'll bite. Prove that the gnostic gospel of thomas is inspired.

There is plenty of theology in the Gospel of Thomas that lines up with orthodox Christianity. But, there is also quite a bit that does not.
