  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This Present Darkness

I'm reading This Present Darkness right now. I'm about half-way through it. It's rather long and I'm finding it quite slow, but it's very good. I wish it went more into the demons and spiritual warfare, but I have a feeling that's going to pick-up.

I believe this is a series. There are definitely some others by this same author. Hope you get it for Christmas and enjoy!

Well, please don't flame me, but here's my opinion...

This Present Darkness is a slow, longwinded book, but it's very interesting. It will hold your attention and it will change the way you think about things. It is the standard-bearer for the genre for a reason.

Piercing the Darkness, the follow-up novel, is a slow, longwinded book, and it failed to hold my attention.

The Visitation, to me, is Peretti's greatest work. It is everything I want a Christian novel to be. It's also long and tedious, but there is so much story there. The themes are almost universal. I'd even recommend it over This Present Darkness.

"The Visitation" and "This PResent Darkness" hold my votes for the most thought-provoking, influential books by Peretti. I just read "Visitation" this summer in two days, glued to the pages. It is certainly not what I call long-winded. I appreciate it as amazing, truly skillfully written fiction.

Oh, and try "The Prophet" as well, if you like his style :)

I've read This Present Darkness years ago if i can remember. It's the book about spiritual warfare? I found it great because it kind of gives you a third eye into the spiritual world. Like out of your own reality and i believe it's essential for us to know that there is a war raging there too. Another book i find that deals with spiritual warfare but where the characters are more "interactive" is Prayer Warriors by Celeste Perrino Walker. It talks of different individuals and how their prayers move the spiritual world. The author describes it in such detail that you believe that it really can happen in your own life. Highly recommended especially for prayer warriors and those who don't believe in the power of prayer.

I read The Visitation about 3 years ago in one night and I have to say - I could not sleep for the next few nights because I kept having these visuals in my mine of one of the characters in the book. I've read all the other books he's written, but I have to agree in that The Visitation has got to be one of Peretti's best ones. :)
