It is unusual (in that this particular scenario hasn't happened before that I'm aware of)

But it's certainly not the first time that a politician has tried to "values signal" in an ad.
(sorta like when you see those ads of these career white collar candidates wearing blue jeans and a flannel shirt wearing a yellow hard hat on a construction site looking at plans with a foreman like they're "in on the action" or have anything of value to add)

I see this sort of thing as the predictable next step in the game of shameless pandering.

Any seat in Congress is a major office because once you are in Congress anybody can take major leadership roles. FOr instance, just two years ago almost nobody has ever heard of Mike Johnson. Now he's Speaker of the House.
