So my wife and I where doing a bit of research on Martin Luther and his dog. Seeming how we named our dog after him it might be somewhat important.

The good news is that by all historical sources Luther and his dog Tölpel where very close compainions. . .

But thats not is what interesting about all of this.

Apparently Tölpel in German most closely translates to the English word "idoit"

So basically Martin Luther had a dog and he named him idoit.

Luther's dog was supposedly mentioned a ton of times in his Table Talk, so there's a few quotes available about the dog and Luther's feelings about dogs in general. One of them said he wanted to be able to pray the way Tölpel watched meat at the dinner table, with his mind on nothing else.

Apparently, Luther also believed that dogs would be at the Resurrection...

Luther on dogs in heaven:

In his lectures on Genesis Luther writes, "animals. . . live only their animal life, without hope of eternal life" (Lectures on Genesis, Chapters 1-5). Yet Luther loved his canine companion Tölpel very much, and did not believe that so faithful a friend could be excluded from heaven. Asked whether he expected to find dogs in heaven, Luther replied, "Certainly, for there the earth will not be without form and void. Peter said that the last day would be the restitution of all things. God will create a new heaven and a new earth and new Tölpels with hide of gold and fur of silver. God will be all in all; and snakes, now poisonous because of original sin, will then be so harmless that we shall be able to play with them" (Table Talk of Martin Luther, DCCXCVII).

I also found this quote from him, although I couldn't find the context it was said in:

"Be thou comforted, little dog, Thou too in Resurrection shall have a little golden tail."

I was very surprised to learn Luther even liked dogs much less had one or had those beliefs about them.
