  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

This is Max. He's very smart and very bossy. He herds us around the house and yard. He could use some sheep.

What a cutie! And someone has hardwood floors too!! Well, telll us more. Where'd you get Max? How old is he? What's he like?

Well, O.K. since you asked . . .

I got him from my cousin who is a canine officer at a local police department. Max's mom was an AKC and his dad was of German lineage. It's a very good lineage due to the differing continents (no worries of too close relatives being bred, etc.) He's stockier than your average AKC. And, though now that he's 8 he does have some stiffness in his hips, he's still doing very well. He doesn't have the low hips and sloping back you see on some of the overbred shepards. This puts much to much pressure on their hips. But, also, I've given him glucosamine and condroitin and Vitamin C and Omega 3s all his life. So he'll be less prone to arthritis.

The picture of him on the floor is him biting a ball. He has a strange habit of laying down on his blanket and picking up one of his toys and just laying there with it in his mouth. Not sure what that's about, but it's cute!

Oh yes NBTB, I forgot to tell you my best story about Max. The times we've taken him swimming with us were quite difficult. He does not allow us to swim in deep waters (especially my young neices). He will swim out and grab you with his mouth, either by your hair or whatever part he can get his mouth on and swim back to shore with you. If we put him in confinement where he can't get to us while we swim, he whines and barks terribly. I guess he's just frantic we will drown!

Awww...how sweet Max is (and a handsome dog too)!

Was he trained for water rescues? Or is that something he just does on his own?
He sounds like a great dog! Thanks for sharing about him!

LOL! They are definately concerned with everyone's safety. He really is marked beautifully. I watch my goldens weight and exercise due to her being prone to hip problems as a breed. Max has a good mommy!

The vet office I worked at did a lot of work with the german shephard rescue and he ran a greyhound rescue out of our office so I've dealt with lots of them. They were generally very sweet (and I don't think I should count the ones who weren't as normal--their previous owners had abused them). My dog is a great dane and he also sleeps with his toys. It's always cute.

He's older too he'll be 10 on June 11th and being a greatdane joint issues have always concerned us too. He's doing well for his age and the vet says he looks about 2 years younger than he is. Though, he's not running as much as he once did. He's also seems to be more stiff if he lays on the floor than he once was (he has his own bed in my parents room). My dog hates water--my sister's danes love it though.

He really is very beautiful thanks for sharing the pics. I love hearing people talk about their pets.

No. It's amazing. All of his sheparding behaviors he had since he was small. We never trained him to do that. If one person pretends to attack another, he will always break them up. My husband and I tease him sometimes by fiening an attack. He will push us apart and bark at whomever he decides started it.

Yes. Goldens are so sweet. I'm glad you don't let her get too fat. Some pet owners think they are being good to them by indulging them but when the pet gets old and fat, they suffer so.

Chipmunk your great dane seems to be doing well for his age! Giant breeds are not expected to live very long. :sigh: I sure do love mine, though.

I know. I don't want to think about it, but I know he's getting much closer. Depending on where you look the average lifespan is listed in the 7-10 range with some living to be 12 (and we're hoping for the 12 or longer).

Mine is rather friendly to everyone. While he is protective of us, he's not so protective of himself. We discovered that he'd only attack if someone attacked us and would do nothing if the only threat was to himself. It's rather weird. We've all been very protective of him around other alpha male type dogs now.

Wow it has been ages since I have seen a German Shephard colored like Tv's Rin-Tin-Tin
called black and sable isn't it? My favorite markings on a shephard. Beautiful.

Yes. I think the picture of him on the dock looks like Rin Tin Tin. Thanks!
