You've found some of the many contradictions in the Bible. These are why I don't take the book literally, but see it as symbolic and spiritual instead.
I shall watch with interest to see how others explain these discrepancies.

Why? Why do you see it as symbolic or spiritual? Why not view it instead as myth or fiction?

I feel for you. I went through nothing but pain for more than 27 years before I was saved. Sometimes God allows us to go through trials and pain before we are saved. Here is the upside of this: it allows us to love and appreciate Him more, and that is nothing but a gift from God. After some time, you will also be able to help others who go through the same. It gives us more empathy. Remember, we are awaiting an ETERNITY in heaven! Your troubles on Earth, are nothing compared to that. Read 2 Corinthians 1:3-7

Did god plan for children to be born with birth defects? If so, why?
