I have been cutting myself for over 7 years now. I think that I want to tell someone because it is getting so hard to deal with and it is getting so much worse. I am trying to decide who I should talk to. I'm trying to decide between a lady at church or the youth pastor. I don't know how to bring it up. I don't know what to do if I can't explain it or if they don't know what it is. Could anyone give me any advice as to how to tell someone? Thanks!

The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.
If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.
If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. when I told some one I told them i wanted to talk to them after the service so I couldn't chicken out. I've heard of some people writiing letters so they didn't have to explain everything.

When I told someone I did it through letter so I didn't have to handle there imediate reaction, but instead there reaction after they have thought about it. Don't worry about them not understanding because in fact it will be very hard for them to understand if they have not been though cutting them selves.
Another thing is have some names of good resources near by so if they want to know more they know where to go.
Lastly telling someone can be incribily frightening and scary but if you tell the right person it can take a lot of the load of having a sercret like this off you. It was one of the best things I did, because until I did I never got bettter only worse.

If you decide to tell someone, please provide them with several links to web sites about the subject. Most people are clueless and easily spooked or creeped out. You want to hand them some professional information on the subject.
